The 2014 200 that I recently bought may have a salvaged motor installed. (It has a heat tab installed on it)
Anyone have insight regarding this topic?
Thanks!

No real insite or experience here but I've only ever seen heat tabs on reman or crate engines which I've always thought were used as a means for the seller to manage potential warranty claims (i.e. if the engine has an issue but the heat tab is melted, warranty won't cover). An original OEM engine would not have heat tabs from the factory. I suppose they could have been added by PO for some reason.

So the PO didn't disclose anything about a salvage motor? I think there is an engine serial number on the front of the engine by the upper rad hose but I don't think its tied to the VIN in any decodable way. You'd need some original sales doc that also had the engine serial number.

As above, heat tabs are installed by the salvage yard. Not by Toyota/Lexus as far as I know. When I was looking for donors for my 200, we considered a few engines that the salvage yards had installed heat tabs on. It’s used in case of a warranty claim. Protects the salvage yard.

Thanks guys. This is still playing out abit....and I will update...

How does the vehicle run? Any issues with the engine at the moment?

It is in the shop right now getting the complete PPI (yep, that cart is in front of the horse...I know).
Waiting on some electrical connector parts & pieces that were hacked by the P.O. I will post up a summary of fixed issues in another week or so.

The vehicle is out of the shop and seems to be running pretty well.

Now I am onto this task:
Here is my insanity endeavor:

The engine block number on the installed salvaged engine in this vehicle is 565640.

Now I am trying to back-figure what the VIN # may be on the original engine donor vehicle. Why? (you may ask) OCD I suppose.

J
[ Y T or M ] (M or 6 others possibles ) (C?) Y? 7 [A (LC or Tundra?)] [J=LC / Tundra?) [1or 2?, (check digit)]
Model year for a 5.7 liter = [8 9 A B C D E F G H J K L M ]
[Assembly plant code =4?]
[then 6 digit 565640] -------this is from the engine block on the “new” salvage” engine.

OR (JUST MAYBE) there is a third party database resource that can trace an engine “number” back to the original VIN of the donor vehicle???

Any thoughts?

When I got my donor motor for mine, I asked the dealer to try and cross reference the marks on the block to validate the seller's claims of age and mileage. They claimed they couldn't. Still interested to know if that was BS but it's running fine so I got over it.

I like the "so I got over it part". I think that is going to be my direction also.....
