SOme updates - I forgot how annoying it is to blead the brakes on these..... I found out that the drivers side rear cylinders were toast. the adjusters were stuck and the piston on one was stuck. and the passenger side front wheel cylinders were also in bad shape and leaking. I did rebuild these. they seem to be much better. I used new shoe springs too. Thanks @SC-Cruiser for those. I also have a SS tool. the brake spoon that was nice to have for this! I am honestly surprised that it stopped before hahaa.

I retorqed it (a bear) and made sure it had the correct preload.
Curious how you measured the preload. Did you slide the axles out so the differential was isolated? I assume you didn't pull the diff?

On those springs, doesn't one spring go in front of the shoes and one go behind?
Yes, as I recently learned. Good catch.

I borrowed a gage looked like a scale from the local auto shop here. measured in inch lbs. I also corrected the break stuff. however I think my cylinders were changed at some point in the rear and my rebuild kits did not fit the rears. I took everything apart and put back together and bought new rear cylinders.

So big time this spring break on the fj55. Lots to cover.
did the finish brakes! they are working better than they were. I did have one set back where one of the front rebuilt cylinders just didnt seal so I gave up on that one and just replaced it with a spare I had laying around. that seemed to do the trick.

then the big fun! I put the header on! I used a ramaflex gasket. the old gasket came off in many pieces. suprised it was still sealing. I have had great luck with these in the past on the fj40 with the same style header. I for sure picked up some better flow with the header. the engine seems to breath better. I ended up rigging up the exhaust to dump out in front of the rear wheel well. I will take the thing to a muffler shop eventually to make it better. but I am not getting exhaust in the cab at least. no exhaust leaks either. I had to weld up a down pipe to avoid hitting the trans mount. Not too hard. I just cut the pipe and angled it down and inward a little. Pictures are out of order...

I also put the weber back on...... I just really could not get the holley to run well at 25mph. It was great when you mashed it but chugged and ran poorly around town at 25mph. I could spend more time and money dialing in jets or I could just throw the weber 38 back on. it works better at slow speeds and with the header its really good. I ordered a new air cleaner assembly for it. Thanks to @RevISK who sent me a K&N filter for the weber. along with some cool cruiser trash and valley hybrid stickers! I stuck them on my compressor. eventually I want to get the little adapter for a factory air cleaner and a factory air cleaner.

Look how much the old filter shrank! IDK when I got the cruiser it was trash but at least fit a little better haha.

then of course one of my tubes in my tires developed a leak. enough where it was flat in the morning and would not hold air. I am pretty sure it was a sticker inside the tire that caused it. I found some foil like stuff in the tire when I took it all apart. I wish I had taken a picture of it. it had the same pattern as the mark on the tube that was leaking pictured below. I ordered a new radial tube for these NON us market radial tires. the great news is the tires are still pretty much new. the bad news is the split ring is in way worse shape than I would have thought. I might look for some new splits. Right now I am running one of the older tires and rims till the tubes come in. I am going to try and clean up the rim and split and then Ill report back on how I feel about it.

The best part of my break was being able to have some Margot time and beach time! dude this little Margot Monster is growing so fast! she is smiling and always wants to see the world around her! best part is she smiles every time she sees the front of the fj55.

Yeah buddy. Looks like I might have missed a small spot when re-oiling the filter. I’m sure it’s fine, but it just doesn’t look uniform.

Enjoy every second with that adorable little larvae, it flies…

no worries I have some of that oil floating around somewhere. the little grub is the best.

well two steps forward 1 step back. my clutch master went out... I should have replaced it with the slave cylinder. All of a sudden I am having to pump up the clutch pedal to disengage and engage gears... thought it could have been push rod adjustment thats come loose but its not... oh well. I should not be riding around on the one old bias ply anyway. I ordered one and hop-fully it gets here before next weekend with my tubes. I am not made of money right now so I bought it off rock auto. BECK/ARNLEY brand. we will see. for the best the brake fluid in the clutch master looked very dirty all of a sudden. Might pull the slave apart and clean it too. I do have a spare that I have not used yet though.

I ordered a new slave cylinder just to be safe. The one thats on it is new less than a year old bought from city racer. but IDK the slave cylinder could be the culprit too after really chewing on it last night keeping me awake...... You never know on new parts these days.

I feel like a seal failed and it dirtied up the fluid somewhere in the system.. I didn't notice any leaks and I looked for them. it was dark brown looking in the reservoir and the fluid is less than a year old.

the one I have on the shelf I think is for the 64 fj40 and I am pretty sure the line in is a different size. 9mm vrs 10mm or something if I recall.

You should score some rebuild kits for all the hydraulic cylinders - very cheap. Keep them in a sealed container.
Yeah I should. that would be smart. I am sure I can find it but do you have an idea on part numbers of those items?

They are sort of year/range dependent. I'm not sure who sells kits any more.
That was not as nearly hard to find as I thought. I will probably buy one of each as back up. I guess I have never really thought about going this way and never really searched for these rebuild kits. I guess it all depends on how true the bore is on the master and slave cylinders too if its worth it.

Dude, can you email me that pic? I want to get a closer look at the rack mount unless someone knows who makes it. I want to build an exoskeleton rack that I can use with both soft and hard tops...
Hurry up on that design, I want one too lol

I wonder if any of the arb racks fit the 55 series? does anybody know? I have always loved how the arb ones look.

Found this in the tire. pretty sure this is what popped my tube. looks to be the foil from a manufacture sticker or something. I have 2 tubes coming but I have a feeling I am going to be re doing all 4 of them. and honestly I might as well redo another one that I have kicking around and put a new tire on it for a spare. @roadstr6 I cant remember but you mounted a spare in the trunk area right? how did you do that?

Side quest: Isuzu pup motor: so engine was taken out, we took the transmission off, pulled the pan, pulled the front cover, pulled the head off, pulled the oil pump out, replaced the head gasket, replaced all 4 intake valves, set timing to where its correct this time. , got the timng chain on, made sure the engine rotates freely. made sure all out timing marks are correct and they are. with the thumb test all 4 cylinders have compression that seems pretty strong. Will do a compression test before we run it. and today we got the engine installed. We still have the usual stuff to finish up like install assesories, wiring, carb, exhaust but things are looking up for the pup and my students I think learned alot. they also seemed pretty stoked when we got the engine back in. it was good to see a sense of accomplishment on their faces. I also want to use the starter with out it running to kinda pump up the oil pressure.

And I kid you not: we pulled the drivers side engine mount off and found the valve cover nut that I was missing. how the heck it got wedged in the motor mount where I could not see it?? who knows. but it was lucky! One of my students said : "Mr. Robert all we had to do to find the nut was to pull the engine and put it back in."

I got my clutch master and slave cylinder in the mail yesterday. I should be able to get the 55 going again this weekend. I am hoping the tubes will be delivered on Saturday where I can install it back. I am also going to fab up something soon for the spare tire mount and get another 750r16 tire for the spare. I might even keep a tube patch kit in the truck or even spare tubes. I really like that idea. especially if I am going to drive off the island.
