That's rough. Hopefully this makes it to the other forums. It sounds like with fewer rangers we need to ensure we look out for ourselves and others all that much more.

Hard to speculate from that article what happened. I imagine no matter what though, a beacon could have been a life saver.

How to prevent this?
1 - carry lots of water any time you go out
2 - better yet, carry Sam's 10 essentials
3 - if you get stuck, don't leave your vehicle
4 - don't go out alone
5 - if you insist on ignoring #4, be sure to tell some one you trust when you will be back and where you are going

Not to go full political but this state sucks ass with managing its parks and staffing!

Not to hi-jack or argue but the above statement tells me you need to visit a lot more parks for a fair comparison. Im not about CA and disagree with 90% of the states believes but think Anza Borrego is great area.

Let me re-phrase that our country sucks at maintaining most of our public lands? @LandCruiserPhil I know most of our parks are understaffed and under funded. s*** I was surprised as hell when I actually saw a National Park Service Ranger at the Saline Valley Hot Springs in Death Valley this Spring. Not trying to argue either. I should for office

What I always worry about when funds are tight and things happen is the knee-jerk reaction to close stuff off.

Not to be insensitive but Darwinism? He had a phone and could communicate, thats what 911 is for? Nonetheless a tragedy.
