Put it on a lift and start scraping and grinding off the rust. Then apply Corroseal to the entire frame and under body. Also, grab Eastwoods internal frame coating with the 18 or 24 inch wand. When you're done have the entire thing coated with an oil based top coat as Corroseal suggests. And replace the transmission crossbar.

Go ahead and pull your rear bumper cover so you can get a real idea of what you're working with. Most of the time the worst of it accumulates in the rear.

@kbahus I have a 69 k10 that same faded red color sitting out back for over 10 years now sunk up to the hubs. The funny thing is the frame in near mint but the body is falling off. Now it seems the opposite the frames rot but the body's stay mint.

Once you're already rusting away, undercoating is closing the stable door after the horse has bolted. If there's rust underneath the coating it will continue to eat away.
That was my thinking too. I have also been told of a clear "paint" that penetrates the rust and stops it from spreading.

I feel your pain as I have lost a few trucks to rust living in the NE. As far as pulling a trailer check your rear frame where your hitch mounts to and the general area around it for extensive flaking. Also check the inside of those lower control arms for rust though pic #4. Check the rear upper shock mounts for rust, stuff gets caught up there. All brake lines should be checked as well.
Great advice! Thank you. three days ago, when I was hammering my trailer hitch into the receiver, lots of rust flakes showered down from under the bumper. It was kind of alarming.

There's a few MUD members on here from Maine. @JonD may be able to recommend a place? Is the rust remediation something you want to tackle yourself or bring it somewhere?

As a former Mainer, I can attest to the complete destruction created by MDOTs use of salt. When I moved to Colordo I couldn't believe all the classic trucks being used as every day beaters.

I am in Maine and have all the stuff for applying fluid film if that is a route you want to go

Might be past that stage though

Might want to go over the frame first and see if you need any repairs first

I am in the Augusta area

Just got my truck in April and the first thing I did was bring it in to Parry Motors in Portland for Fluid Filming. Chris is an independent Toyota specialist and he is the man. Charged me something like $65 to do the job while he was doing some other work on the truck for me. He doesn't wheel but owns an 80 and just bought his wife a 200.

I think I'm going to have the underside checked for mechanical integrity first by a reputable shop. My plan was to keep this on the road another couple of years then delegate it to "yard" duty where 4x4 is mandatory.

I just sent him a quick email. Thank you for the referral!

Thank you for that offer. I will probably check the mechanical integrity first. My biggest fear is losing vehicle control on the road.

Decades ago I worked on a ranch in Eagle, CO. We used some pretty old equipment that was still very serviceable with no hint of rust. I have no idea how locals navigated snowy roads. I think they hibernated till spring. I left before the snow.

No problem. I seriously cannot heap enough praise on Chris. I hope to never have to use another mechanic again for the rest of my life. Also heads up I would call as opposed to email.

It is indeed a small world. I knew Chris' Dad over 40 years ago. Chris & I just connected via email. Thank you Jon for the referral. His dad was immensely helpful to me when I was a kid.

Ha! That is so awesome. Please tell him I said hi!

@Edsel please document your process if you end up doing the work at Parry Motors. If yours comes out well, I may make a trip up to Portland myself.
