Running Seven

A guy down the street rescues greyhounds, he stopped and talked last night while walking "Seven", a muscular 4-yr-old. I mentioned it would be fun to run with Seven, neighbor guy was all enthusiastic about it, 'till I mentioned I usually run about 6am. I've run with a lot of dogs and a few horses, but I'm cautious, most don't do well after a few miles. It'd be nice to run with a dog that can do some distance at decent speed.

I googled about running distance with greyhounds, some websites say don't do it, others say they're great for distance running. My neighbor says they're bred to tire out prey, they can run long distances. I'd definitely start with short distances, just like if I'd been off running awhile. Maybe hit the beach (apparently their paws are webbed for sand, not swimming), so he can drink water when he wants. Anyone have specific knowledge about distance running with greyhounds? I'm thinking 6-10 mile runs eventually, and not in the heat.

I take my dog on mtn. bike rides all the time, mostly 7-10 miles. We stop every once in awhile to rest and let him drink water. It doesn't get above 70 degrees here too often, so heat isn't much of an issue.

I don't know anything about greyhounds.

My girlfriend in college had a couple horses that rarely got out of their little pasture. The quarter horse escaped and I just ran along behind it keeping it from the roads. Eventually it just stopped running and I threw a rope on it and led it home. After that I tried running with it occasionally, it seemed to like running but wasn't a distance runner. I tried running with my daughter's thoroughbred a couple times, that didn't go well, difficult horse.

My running speed would probably be a fast walk for a greyhound. My golden keeps up for 2.6 miles in the Winter, I've never tried longer, but he doesn't keep up in the Summer weather. I'm thinking a greyhound might not like the Winter or the current 90* heat, but would be alright in the Fall.

my inlaws greyhounds run around our 3 acres all the time in 95 degree heat, I'm thinking they could hang but if it sees something that it wants to chase you're fxxxed.

When the horse can't keep up with scott, he picks it up and carries it home.

When the greyhound starts to chase something, scott will run it down and correct its behavior.

I wouldn't know how to go about chasing after a horse and then determining if it was qualified as not a "distance runner". How many miles can you run?

Yeah I've read not to let it off the leash or it'll chase after stuff. Good to hear they're alright with heat, I read they can get heat stroke or something from the heat.

Any recreational runner can outrun a lot of animals over distance. It doesn't seem like it, but humans are very good at distance running.

they are trained in the heat down here but understand they're acclimated to it, dogs up north may not do as well. I can tell you that they are way more powerful than they look, they will run you over or drag your ass assuming you have them on a leash.
