Ok, engine has been randomly running hot here and there lately. It is not just while idling or at highway speeds, so pretty sure its not the fan clutch. New thermostat and fan clutch two years ago along with a new radiator. The old one had about 20lbs of sediment in the bottom! Could power flushing the system have pushed that crap into the heater core causing this prob?

When heading up to the Eisenhower tunnel to go boarding I hafta turn the heater on to keep it cool....not gonna be good in the summer! The temp also creeps up with just normal city driving sometimes too. Any ideas? I have been cat less for 5 years now and was wondering if that could create backpressure in the exhaust manifold making this problem worse...or causing it all together. Do I just need to upgrade to a better radiator or what do you guys think?

I can't see how not having a cat would be an issue, unless you replaced the cats with something more restrictive.

Was the new radiator OEM? If not, I'd start there.
 
I knew that was coming! No its not, i think I got it from Spector off road about 3 years ago this summer.
 
I certainly wouldn't rule out the fan clutch. I've seen too many people incorrectly assume it's not the clutch based on when/how it is/isn't overheating. No fun replacing everything else in the $ystem and then at the very end finnding out it was the fan clutch.

I second the fan clutch. Your symptoms sound pretty similar to mine when my fan clutch was going out. The fan clutch don't last that long, especially non-Toyota ones. Do a little searching and you will find plenty of info on a few ways to check if it is working properly. One of the easiest ways to tell is the lack of start up roar. I also did the grab test, which isn't as bad as it sounds.

This is an FJ, do they have the same fan clutch as the FZJ? Associated issues?
