Background: 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP (supercharged 3800) with ~100k. 4th gear went out. I had the tranny rebuilt. Car ran great for ~1 year.
Recently started slipping, locking up hard, and running hot (210+ compared to ~150 previously). Pulled the tranny out...1 set of clutches were toast and the valve body gasket was blown out in a small area. Tranny guy attributes the damage to bad torque converter.
Replaced bad parts in the tranny and got new torque converter. Runs and shifts like a dream and everything works....but it still runs hot!
So, today I pulled out the radiator. Seemed moderately plugged up with dust/road debris. I thoroughly cleaned the fins and flushed the radiator. I bought some tranny flush stuff and flushed the tranny cooler...barely any gunk/debris in either section.
The tranny STILL runs hot! The only plus is that it takes a littlelonger to get hot.
Through all this the engine runs at ~195 degrees (stock t-stat) and never overheats. The fans are both working, but don't seem as loud as they should be? (never really payed attention before). Doesn't really matter from highway to city streets...still gets hot. Even the engine bay is still noticably hotter than usual.
Basically, I'm out of ideas. Really the only thing left is the water pump or the thermostat. But if either of those were bad I would think the engine would overheat? Maybe a tranny fluid line? I was told the tranny should never exceed engine temp...which is true because when it was running good the hottest I saw was 210 during stop n go traffic in chicago. Other than that it never went above ~150.
So, Please help and give me some ideas or suggestions or life experiences or anything!
Thanks,
Max
