Good afternoon all,

Long time lurker here but I have finally come on to a problem with my rig that I can not find an answer to on here. My rig is a 2002 lx470 that I have had for about a year.

The main issue is when I turn while moving I hear a grinding or rubbing noise. Happens when I turn both left and right. (When I turn left i hear it on the right and vice versa) When going straight there is a very faint rhythmic rub from something spinning, I had always believed that was because one of my rotors is slightly warped and it was rubbing on the pad but I never looked into it. As for how long this has been happening Im not really sure. I just noticed it recently when the weather got warm enough to have the windows down again. With the windows up you can't really hear it.

Possible related items and causes:
-I have a metallic rattle under the car when I go over hard pumps that I haven't been able to track down
-My rig is very rusty, it came from Minnesota, I live in Iowa, it not getting any better
-The emergency brake is stuck in the down/off position. Can't pull the handle up at all. Done a little research on this, guessing the bell cranks are rusted just haven't gotten around to tackling it. That being said the cable it still taught, maybe it's causing them to rub?
-I'm about 80% it's coming from the back on both sides.

The closest thing I have found is on a tundra forum where their brake back plates were rubbing while turning and rattling when going over bumps. Their solution was to hit it with a bfh and bend it back. Tried hitting both front and back today with a bfg and no dice...maybe the hammer wasn't big enough? I haven't pulled the rotors off to see if I can see any rub marks anywhere. Looked at it today and said meh seems like a lot of work. I'll have to look up how to pull them off though if no one has any other ideas of what it could be.

Also here's a video with the sound. Sorry it's pretty quiet but you can hear it while I'm turning.

Thanks for you help!

Your rotors could be scraping the calipers. Jack up your front end and rock at 12 and 6 to check for play in the wheel bearings.

Thanks for the help, I will Jack it up tomorrow and see if I have any play.

Couple of other things to mention that I thought of, the tie rod ends were replaced last fall and the sway bar bushings in the front and rear need to be replaced as well but haven't gotten around to that yet either.

Jacked it up today and checked all of the tires for 6-12 play. Didn't feel any in any of them. Decided to take the rear brakes off. Noticed a few things. First you could see they had been rubbing against the back plate on both sides in the same spot. Also the inside of both rotors did not look good. I attached some pictures, any idea what this is from? I'm guessing these parts of the brakes are rubbing on the back plate. One way or another looks like I'll be putting new pads and rotors.

It just looks like they have been heavily corroded at some point, the truck was probably not used for a long time before you bought it. Make sure the caliper pins are free and that the caliper slides on them as these can seize, I bought new when I done my brakes but they can be cleaned up.

Thanks for the heads up Julian. I remember one side was free but can't remember if the other side was as well.
