Just finishing up birf job and "mr last step" is not cooperating on DS. The snap ring groove is about half exposed. I tore it back down to the knuckle this morning and did it over again. Nada. Same crap next day. The PS is fine and back together. I did the search deal and came up with retracing my steps- which i completely just did over. The rotors and hubs are the same as are the wheel bearings after inspection. Everything else from the trail tamers kit is installed- accept the retaining nuts- they are too big for the socket. Tq values straight from the FSM.
Hmmm, I have never encountered this. New birfs? I would have someone measure a spare birf and compare, its possible that it is made incorrectly. Is one of the bearings not full seated? It seems like the max travel out on the birf is determined by the spindle... I can't remember exactly..
Original birfs. You are correct on the spindle. Thats why I tore it down this morning and did a full inspection. Realistically all I changed that would affect the distance from the spindle flange to the max extension of the shaft was seals and grease. I did check the new hub seal and re-seated it flush with the housing. Stumped.
I have the bolt in the center pull and have put a pair of vice grips on it but you can hear the contact on the spindle inner face- metal to metal when it contacts pulling on the shaft. It was really tight getting that snap ring out when i disassembled; but it was in the groove.
Dont tell anybody......
Maybe just face the drive flange and quit wasting your day off.
I mean really, if you are assembled correctly and you dont have stacked gaskets somewhere. Either the inner spindle bushing or the drive flange is the issue.
I never used to run them back in the day. Granted that was before I knew any better but also that was on a part time 4wd too. You could also try driving it a little bit and try popping them back on in 20 miles. Maybe it'll loosen them up a little assuming it wasn't user error... how many beers did you have during this whole endeavor?
Precision grinding was my quick fix-.005 off of outer land. As usual the shaft loosened up after use......
I checked it twice after 60 miles and its all good.
