Well, things may have been a little adventurous getting to Ouray from Engineer Pass. It looks like I’m puking a bit of gear oil on the DS rear. It could be just a clogged breather pushing oil through or a failed seal.

I switched to the hex keyed plugs and fill, but forgot to pack it. I think it is a 10mm IIRC. Can anyone confirm the size.

We are headed to Telluride via Ridgeway. Any recommendations on where to pick one up so I can monitor levels would also be appreciated.

I’d like to limp our way back to Tucson as I don’t have the parts or special tool on me to fix it myself. I’m not opposed to getting into a shop, but that would be a multiday adventure. Worse places to be stuck.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What’s your rig? There’s a Toyota dealer in Montrose. Not sure on the hex size but there are 50+ 200’s in Ouray so I’m sure someone has what you need. Maybe post up in the LCDC 10 thread that you need an assist. I’m northwest of ridgway in my 200 right now and might have the hex key but not sure.

80 series. I’ll take Montrose into consideration. It’s only about an hour from Ouray. I’ll try my luck in Ouray first, then Ridgeway. Well make a decision on Montrose vs Telluride if we can’t find what we need in Ridgeway.

Thanks.

80 series OEM hex replacement plugs are confirmed 10mm.

Yes 10 MM is the standard size wrench. I've switch my FJ62 and 40 series over to these plugs. When I Sears was closIng a bought a few 3/8" drive socket for the 10 MM hex head to be sure I would always have one available.

Perfect, glad my memory is good. I picked one up in Ouray. I picked up some gear oil too. I cleaned things up and there was no leaking driving 5 miles of forest road back into Ouray.

I drove the next little bit to Ridgeway where there is a bit more room to check the levels. If it doesn’t leak any more and the levels are fine we should have no problems.

And back in Tucson. After topping off with about 1/2 quart I made it to Montrose where I could put it on a lift. It didn’t look like an active leak so off we went. I checked again in Telluride after about 60 mile of rocky roads and it was still full. I still smell gear oil. I don’t know if it is real, residual or a trick of memory. Either way, I’ll be rebuilding the rear axle soon.

Do you smell gear oil in the cab or outside by the axle?

When the seal around the stick shift in either the tranny or transfer case starts leaking (like now) I smell gear oil inside my Land Cruiser and Tacoma.

It was mostly outside, but then I also had an open bottle of gear oil inside too. Transfercase looked fine when I gave it an inspection under a lift.
