RSE controls? seriously terrible or am I a Ruh-Tard?

I'm no newb when it comes to RSE's - nearly every car we've owned has had one - But I for the life of me cannot figure out how to do the following

1. Change the source on the RSE w/o the remote? - When I remove a DVD the RSE goes to it's menu screen and does NOT play the dvd by default

2. Push play or start a DVD that is at the menu without the remote. Surely there is a way to push play/pause from the front console?

We do have the remote, but it's a bit painful to have to keep track of and use when you have kids that make stuff disappear....

The manual is all but useless for RSE controls as well... any guidance would be appreciated, I've tried to search and as you can see i've been on this forum for a grip of time, with many L's, LX's, FJs, and 4R to my name - and this is just annoying. It seems like it's PSEUDO integrated to the front display.

I've considered hacking the nav just so I can get to the video playback buttons =\

am I actually the only person to complain about this?....

I do know that 'tard' is as acceptable as homo or tar baby.

Yep, probably a bad choice of words.

So, do you have an owner's manual? I would think it spells out how to use the system in there. I've only turned my unit on two or three times, so I'm not too familiar with it. Seems I had to use the remote each time to get it to play or to navigate menus.

I'm okay with me being a Tard, or homo or turd for that matter... I do of course have the manual, it's useless when it comes to the RSE, What I was hoping for was when the LC is in mommy mode, her not having to use the remote to control the DVD player... I'm pretty sure that's less safe than her just being able to use the DVD controls on the screen but she has to stop and put the car in park and use the ebrake..

I love my toyotas i really do, even the quirkiness, but toyota is so far behind when it comes to techno stuff - I mean my 2008 GX *STILL* had a tape deck ;P

This is my 5th LC or LX and they've all had some whackiness, just was hoping Toyota had thought through this better on the 200... silly me!

I do find it comical that my wife and kids liked the Honda pilot and or MDX because of the RSE... who cares if she's happy, i heart my LC!

You can do a search on Mud and you should find a couple different sticky postings about overriding the nav antenna so you can use the DVD controls, GPS search, etc. I posted one myself on installing the Prestigious override system. There are cheaper alternatives that simply splice a switch into the system to temporarily fool the GPS (and the nanny system) into thinking the LC's stationary. I agree that the nanny feature is a huge annoyance.

I've done that on all of my other GX/LC/LX vehicles - I was hoping to not have to lol.

Toyota went off the deep end with disabling stuff while in motion.

What shocks me is they went through the time to put in a motorized overhead monitor, which you can control from the front panel, but you can't select a source or control any of the operations - even while stopped you have to use the remote to select a source for the RSE - seems like a huge oversite... Mazda, Chevy, Acura, Honda all have the ability to lock out rear control as well as pause, play, menu select, source select etc from the front panel...

Mind you i'd never own any of those vehicles just shocking to me that toyota hasn't figured this out - I'm half tempted to believe there is a tape deck somewhere stashed in the car...

My apologies for being outspoken here, but I would appreciate it if you'd watch your choice of words. My 4 yr old son has Down Syndrome. I'm sure your intent was to point out one of Toyota's nagging little flaws / (and obviously) lagging tech, but Ruh-Tard doesn't make your point any stronger. It's worth spending 10 seconds reflecting on how your posts might be perceived in a larger audience. I'm not a "soapbox" kind of guy, but you hit close to home - my home. How about uninformed, ignorant, "missing something"...? There are plenty of alternatives.

EDIT: I should have noticed the time stamp in the original post... and the fact that the OP was last seen 5/2013. Three scotches apparently makes me ornery. :)
