295/75R16 BF Goodrich All-Terrains on American Racing Chambers wheels. The tires are a low glass compound made by BFG for Expeditions West and used on his Arctic Circle Expedition in 2007. Great tires!

I picked her up in October of 2007, and have slowly but surely been upgrading/modding her for my family overlanding vehicle. Some light rust repair, followed by an upgrade of the seating to Bestop Trailmax Pro Thermal (Heated) front seats, and a Trailmax folding seat for the rear were installed, along with a nice moulded SOR carpet kit.

With minimal prep, a 2000+ mile trip through the Copper Canyon area of Mexico proved the worth of the original, no-nonsense color and style of the Troopy, as it performed flawlessly over some of the roughest roads, many of which were not on any maps; only known to locals and drug runners. Since then, the batteries have been upgraded to Sears Platinum Series (Odyssey rebadged), windows have been tinted, and color matched paint used to complete the exterior.

I found that I like the less than perfect paint, as it attracts the right attention, and doesn't necessarily look like it would contain a bunch of gear, radios, etc....so the exterior will remain simple....

Next mods are a 20 gallon ARB Flexi Tank water tank, 2m/70cm Yaesu Radio, custom cargo barrier, rear cargo floor and some electrical clean up under the hood.

Hardest thing is the turn signal stalk is on the right side....now every time I drive my wife's subaru I turn on the wipers....:lol:

hahah I do the same thing..

The other thing I notice is that I drift closer to the center line. When driving lhd you are used to having the center line close to you, so I catch myself drifting towards it when rhd

Andrew, the troopy is coming along very nicely.


Couple of comparison questions for you.
I know you got the tires/wheels as a package deal. Would you or will you go down to a 265/75 after these wear out? Similar to what your 80 had.

Besides the shear coolness factor of the troopy how does it compare when driving with the 80? I would expect a bit more cab noise, but what about hwy travel and Mexico/Baja travel?

I like the height of the tires, but would go narrower. The traction is excellent, but I still get some rubbing on the steering and fenders under full flex. I think the 295s are one reason I'm getting good mileage, as they give a bit of an overdrive.

Interior noise is much louder than the 80 series, but not as much as my old 40 series for some reason....maybe over the years I've just lost some hearing...:rolleyes:

I get in Skeddy's 100 series and just about melt in comfort...

I'm still working on some additional sound deadening on the fender wells and cargo area. I don't really notice the noise, even in Mexico, but it was really hard to do any listening to books on tape...but then we only had the one stock 4x6 speaker by the passenger at the time. Since then I've "upgraded" to a couple of really cheesy 8" boxes from Crap Mart ($20/pair) that give more volume....

I've been using mine as a DD for a while...I really like the propane for that...runs smooth, and is about .70 per gallon cheaper than gasoline.

Just "finished" a 1982 Honda CB450T pseudo cafe build....so I've got another moto to scream around town on too...

So all that being said, what would you settle on for size? By the way looks great. I have a similar one that is an 82 coming in November.
 
Any thoughts on "rhino lining" interior floors? I am trying to come up with ways to keep the rust and wear down on a rig that will come from inland AUS to NW Ohio.

The tires were a great deal from ExpeditionsWest, and have worked great so far...they've grown on me some.

If I were to purchase new tires, I'd likely go narrower....

I didn't want to line the interior, as I want to leave the rig restorable if, in the future, I go that way....I do plan on doing some undercoating; however.

The paint is a custom match from the Sherwin Williams automotive paint dealer in Phoenix, Arizona. I had a neighbor take the gas cover to have them match, and then custom mixed the paint. Not cheap...the first two cans ran about $50.00, but since then I've got another 5 cans for about $80.

Does that rim come in the proper "back spacing". Your will need 3 1/2" of
Neg. back spacing. Most rims do not have this much. Usually they have 4 to
3 3/4.

Do you know about this on the American Racing rims you have?
 
Well I hope you don't mind, but I am using your project for info and I love those rims. I also saw them on the cruiser that was for sale out in Portland for over $40k. Gives it a "military" look. This is mine that is coming in a few months from AUS (knock on wood)

No problems at all. I liked the wheels because they don't detract from the utilitarian style of the Troopy, while saving about 25lbs per wheel/tire combo from the original split rims.

....and there are some great mods in the pipeline which even have me drooling...
