A squeak is an odd noise to come from a differential but suppose it is possible. Have you checked fluid?

...metal or debris on the magnet?

I'll check in the morning and see what we find.

Hi,
New to the forum.
I found it because I'm having the exact same problem with my 97 4runner.

Rolling at 5 mph and shifting in and out between drive and neutral is like throwing a switch on the squeak.

If I hold my foot on the brake and give more gas the sound stays the same (directly proportional to wheel speed.)

I put it in four wheel low and don't see a decerable difference.

Was planning to take this thing on vacation in the morning. Need help fast, Please!

I highly suggest removing the driveshaft and see if that is the issue...have had bad u-joints on both my 80's and they both sounded like this. IF you do not have the center diff lock button, now would be a great time to call Slee. :) Seriously, I did not seem to have any u-joint issues when I looked when I was under the truck, but once they were off it was obvious one was bad.

Similar issue, got worse as I was driving to town tonight. Fixed it (temporarily) in the Walmart parking lot by squeezing some molle grease into the knuckle with a ziplock bag. It’s significantly less, but i still hear it a little. Praying it will hold out till we can buy a second rig, then ill be able to replace the birfs and seals. Thank God for tools, flashlights and lots of rubber gloves that i keep in my rear storage compartment. Another thing that made the job easy was that the weather in Taos NM this evening was 50 deg and clear!

Had a similar noise at a different speed.

Front axle service took it away. In my case it was probably a combination of things: not enough grease; old grease; loose wheel bearing; axle rubbing on spindle bushing (with not enough fresh grease). Before I tore into it I checked the diff oil and found some axle grease in there. A few fill and flush and the oil was clean again but the noise was still there.

Greased the U-joints recently?
