Lurking at a 3rd gen 4Runner for an expedition rig.
But is it even possible to install a roof tent on those? My previous rig ('94 FZJ80) had gutters, good for sturdy aftermarket roofracks, but from what I see on pics those Runners don't.
And I guess that the factory plastic roof racks can't withstand such a weight.
Thanks for your help.

Hi there-

I definitely would not install a rooftop tent on the factory rack, but we see a lot of people install tents on Thule or Yakima crossbars without any problems.

Thanks Dan. I was just wondering how we could install the crossbars given that they're aren't any gutters on 3rd gen Runners. Can the factory roof rack be removed and replaced with sturdy bars?
(EDIT): I now see that 4Runners actually have rails that can be outfitted with dedicated pads and bars.
I guess a broader question would be about the load that those roofs can withstand.

I run Yakima feet and load bars in the rails for my Mombasa, plenty sturdy.

I run a thule rack for my autohome. The stock bars were not wide enough to support the tent. Two bars have worked great for 3+ years, I may add a third center bar one day for peace of mind.
