Well, I picked up a BJ70 up in Edmonton. Pretty straight, and seems to be well taken care of. Of course getting it home, you start to see all the stuff you didn't notice.

I've found a rectangular area of rust on the roof, just up from the rain gutter area on the passenger side. Any ideas how this got there? Seems almost impossible for water to get in that area... unless it spent a lot of time upside down!

I've already got out the fluid film and have been spraying everything down :)

The rain gutters initially had me worried, but after scraping away the body putty in the suspected areas, it appears solid

The roof and rain gutters are a virtually impossible part of the body to oil, and as long as there is no missing seam sealer you wouldn't think water would get in there, but it does (moisture)... My rig is an 86 CDN spec BJ70 hardtop, and I'm always repairing small portions of rust... Just keep getting it krowned or oil it yourself... Use a good thin oil, soak the doors, rockers, everywhere you can get, if you figure out how to oil the GD roof let me know!

If you have rust spots you don't feel like painting, or they show up in the winter and it's too cold to paint, I've noticed anti seize is an amazing rust inhibitor. Although it's also pricey stuff unless you get it on sale!

:

A lot of 60 and 70 series rust from the inside out from condensation that forms on the interior of the roof.
I leave the windows down a little and always air them out after a wet period.
I beleive it has a lot to do with the landcruiser's excellant sealing to keep dust out
Roof racks that scratch the paint also help with rust in the roof
