I have a Confer RAck with a custom floor put in. The floor is expanded metal welded throughout and it holds ALOT of weight! I've easily put in over 300lbs on long trips to Baja. I also had a custom ladder built that slips in over the side edge and kinda locks into place. The bottom part of the ladder has two studs that reast up against the top of the rear tire. Works well but the only downside is the ladder is a bit heavy and you have to leave room on the rear of the rack for it. GO Confer!

I have the Kaymar tradesman rack and am very pleased with it. I have a 4x4 connection roof rack box mounted in the front and expanded mesh on the rest. it is nice in that it has full length rain gutter mounts, is 8' long the clamps are non adjustable so they don't loosen and rattle and it fits tight to the roof lines and less likely to grab a tree or two. I have slept on mine a couple times and wouldn't hesitate to throw a party up there.
I put a swing out ladder on my rear bumper but most of the time I can reach everything including my box by standing on my sliders. you can see the set up if you start looking at the below link to pictures in reverse order

I have a Confer on my rig and I love it. I get many comments about how well it looks and how well it is built. I also have an expanded metal floor in my rack.

Roof-Racks

Sorry. I forgot... Just my $.02 but a roof rack that comes without a floor is useless.
I don't know how many $500 roof racks that I have seen with $20 warped plywood floors that really make it look junky. If you are going to build your own rack..... go the distance and get expanded metal for the floor, it is so nice being able to fasten stuff down anywhere easily.

Instead of messing with a ladder, I bought a product from Hitchmate which is a folding step carried in the cruiser; unfold it and it sits over/on top of the front or rear tire to access the rack. Can then be moved to either side. Got mine as Bass Pro Shop Dallas, I'm sure they are not that hard to find. Seems like about 40 bucks. Works for me.
