I've read that the OEM roll bars are weak. Since I take my boys out in the truck, I want to beef things up a bit, but I'm not at the point of wanting to drop big cash on a metaltech.

I found an aftermarket FJ40 roll bar on craigslist that I am going to look at. I am planning on picking this up on Thursday, unless the wiser folks among us advise against it. It appears to be an aftermarket roll bar that I am assuming will be made with thicker tubing. I could tie a front cage to this and would possibly have a very strong, safe cage.

Any advice?

Doug: What's your spending limit? Ryan can probably give you an estimate for anything you want made. At least that way you'll KNOW your kids are safe.

Unless you have no roll bar currently, my advice is to pass on that rollbar. That roll bar is not going to buy you much over the stock one. If you are going to take off the top and are worried about safety you need to put up the $$$ and get a real cage.

Thanks guys. I'll pass on that roll bar then.
I will talk to Ryan in the next month or so and see what I can get done.

Thanks for the input.

Not sure about your set up but there are a number of post is the 40 forum concerning the safety of the 40 as a kiddie mover. Of particular concern are the opposing jump seats and lap belt only configuration. Might be worth a scond look since the DC area has one of the highest if not the highest auto accicdent rate in the country.

Not trying to be a party pooper but it is worth a second thought. :)

I hear you...and that thought has made me second guess the value of the FJ40 to me. That is why I've replaced the jump seats with a rear bench, with belts. Everything is bolted to the floor with Grade 8 bolts and BIG OLE WASHERS. Then, I put the boys booster seats in the back and cinch the belts down tight.

I have lap/shoulder belts up front as well.

Front discs and a Metaltech family cage are next on the list.

I'm on it!!! I've decided to do a dirt bag fix of the rocker panels....grind em down (or off) and fill in any holes with Fiberglass...then rattle can!

I got the back seat out of a Suzuki Samurai. Fits perfectly and folds up out of the way.
