rock rail question

Question for those who have seen the factory rock rail/sliders. Do the theyalso function as a step rail or are they tucked too far under for this? This is an important issue as my wife does not like the height of the FJC when getting in.

From what I remember with the one at SEMA, they are under the body, just barely sticking out.
