I just wanted to try to get a show of hands to see who is interested in a wheelin trip before winter.

I'm looking at "legal" spots, but I'm open for whatever, especially if closer.

Distances are from HR

1. We have a thread on Uwharrie, didnt seem to get much interest.
About 5.5 hrs
UNSC is going on sept 25-27.
I'm going to go if at all possible.

2.Geo Wash Forest
Little closer-4.5 hrs
I may go this month as I can stay with family nearby.
Still though, a road trip buddy-system is preferable.

3. UNSC is going to Harlan Off Road in KY in OCT 15-18
Long Haul- 8hrs But they appear to get good turn-outs

4. BBRC and others are going to Rausch Creek PA Oct 2 -3
About 6 hrs

5. There is also Crozet- Not sure how that actually works.
Close-3 hrs
Looks like a Membership by referal. I emailed the guy there during a Jeep event and he was cool about just showing up and paying.
Didnt go though, my buddy bailed.

Never heard of Crozet, I'd be interested in getting more info on that place as it is a lot closer ...

I need to take a few of us around the area to some trails ....

On Sundays, we used to just drive around and look for trails, hahaha, good times, when gas was cheaper ....

Here is the info on Crozet
CNC 4x4 Trail Fact Sheet - Crozet, VA
Looks like we would need to get a group for them to open the park.
There are some good videos on youtube.

I may be able to get a couple Jeep friends to fill the ranks.

I'm definitley up for some local stuff if you know any.
But I'm not real excited about pure mud.

Sounds fun .... I've been out that way plenty .....

Hey everyone,

I took a short vacation in the mountains near Harrisonburd/Luray and checked out some of the trails.
I didnt do anthing rough cause I had the family along, more like re-con.

The 1st area was near Harrisonburg. Looked like a short trip.
It actually took an hour to make the 15mile trip to the trailhead.
The FS refers to it as Rocky Run and there is no fee. The website says there are trails for amature to expert, but I think they are refering to ATV trails.

The trip up was via about 7 miles of Forest Service road, nice drive.
There were 2 trails here, one was Dictum, there are a lot of videos of this trail on youtube. Hardcore.
There were some local hunters there and recommended against going either alone.

We also checked out 2 trails near Luray. Easier to get to, right off a main road. Cost $5 for a pass.

Taskers Gap was a long rough road with ATV trails running off everywhere. Not really a challenge but I did run in 2 Low to keep the speed down. There is more there but we only went 3 miles or so.

Peters Mill was more fun, climbs etc. We did not go far. We hit a spot where the climbs were a bit steep, with drop off, and opted for safety. Alone with family etc.

Hopefully we can get a group up there and see the rest of the trails. Peters Mill would be my choice to start.

There are also tons of FS roads to drive.

Peters Mill- This is a bit of a climb with a drop off coming back down.

Very cool Dave ... Glad you opted out for safety in some areas. I don't have that kind of discipline.

We will get a group up there, that would be great !!!!

How long was your drive to the area of those trails???

It was 4 hrs to Luray, then 30 min up to the trails.
Harrisonburg is a bit closer, but the trails are farther out.
The GWNF near Luray has a campground a few miles from the trail head.

Yeah, it was hard to turn around. But we also had one of my son's friends along, so the risk tolerance was low.
Also, it was on weekdays and there was nobody around.

Looks like a beautiful scenery out there Dave. We definitely need a group to go up there for some FS roads trailing. When did you go up there? You should have invited me since I'm on leave.

We did our exploring on Sun/Mon. But we didnt really have any specific plans. I just wanted to see what and where you could go, if it was close to where we were staying.

BTW, the 60 did great. 900 mile, mosty mountains.
It did have some brake issues the 1st day. The house we got was on a mtn top with a 7mile steep climb. Had to go 1st/2nd gear all the way up.
Coming back down the brakes got too hot and smoked.
The next few days I came down slowwwwwww.
