My wife and I are both taking off the last week and a half before my son starts 1st grade (end of Aug) and I thought it might be cool to get out of dodge and see some sights.

The boy is six and a half, a great passenger, and well behaved on car trips, so I'm thinking 5-6 hour days with stays in either motels or camping along the way. The dog will stay home with my sister and we'll take our Accord.

I'd like to take 5 or so days total and see some interesting and (at least slightly) educations "sights."

Suggestions?

If we head towards (and past) Niagara Falls, what's next? I've never been to that part of the country.

DC? NYC? ???

I doubt Canada is an option given the new passport requirements though we could certainly try to get those before then.

my kids loved the Ford museum in Michigan at that age. We drove to Niagra falls then jumped the border and drove to Michigan. The Ford museum is a three day tour I think. It has one of the best museums for mordern day America and then a turn of the century working town.

I'd do it again in a heart beat.

Gettysburg, DC, Chesapeake Bay, Any Battleship tours or something like that in Norfork Va.?

being in Avon NC right now I can't believe how cool the outer Banks are. and how un crowded they are as well. Kill devil hills/ Nagy's head area has a lot of mini golf and kid entertainment type stuff and Hatteras has hte light house (look up on line how they moved it away from the water)
and there are ferry's and fishing nd the beech and you can drive on the beach.
if the lv wasn't back howme I would have a hard time leaving this place

I've mapped out a "loop" that would go from our home in VT to NYC, to Gettysburg, PA, to Hershey, PA, to Niagara Falls, NY, then along the great lakes and the Canadian border to Lake Champlain and our friends' place in St Albans VT, then back home.

About 1400 miles, a bit over 24 hours drive time straight through. Spread out over 4 or 5 days that could be a cool trip.

Sara is very adamant about getting our passports so we could cross into Canada at Niagara and come back to VT via Canadian roads, maybe fit Granby Zoo in there.

We just got back from Sesame Place. Not a bad take, my kids loved it. Thats not too far off your PA sights you have there and very very close to Philly. Your son might be on the higher end of the age for the whole sesame thingy, but like I said, my kids loved it. Lots of water park stuff as well as a few rides. PM me if I can help with some info.

My parents drove my brother, sister and myself up to and around Nova Scotia in a VW camper when I was about 10; plenty of history up there, crazy tides(Bay of Fundy) and the best whale watching I've ever whitnessed. Look into the passports, there's a lot to see north of us.

Assuming you've ruled out Ruta 60, I would second Nova Scotia. You can take the car on the ferry from Portland which will mix it up a bit. It's bigger than you think so leave plenty of time. And make sure to reserve places to stay in advance. I didn't and had a cranky GF for a while :-(

I have also heard that Prince Edward Isle is cool.
