Strange...
If we leave the RJ in low range for a few days in the garage, when you shift back to high range, the 4WD lamp stays on. Then, leave it in high range for a few days and pull it into low, the 4WD light doesn't come on.... Must be a gummy or lazy switch somewhere.

Its a vacuum operate transfer and all this is without using the dash switch, just pulling it in and out of high range to low via the floor transfer case lever and vice-versa. The 4WD lamp seems to stay in whatever mode you were for a few days before it comes good.

It goes in and out of high range/low range effortlessly, but the 4WD lamp takes days to follow suit. Its not a daily drive undergoing slow and low $$ readying for RWC as the lads first car.

Is there a switch that could be getting stuck off the transfer lever we can easily replace or fix ?

Cheers.

Check the switch on the transfer case - when the vaccuum actuator activates/chooches it shifts a rod that engages the front driveshaft. The light is driven by a small switch on rod the in the transfer case which slips in and out of a detent to turn the light on and off.

Check that switch - it might have dodgy wires or may have seized. Its the switch behind the vaccuum UFO on the case. Looks like a big nut with 2 wires.

Good deal thanks for the tip. I'll print this off and hope it all makes sense when we're looking through all the crud. What's the vacuum UFO is that a big can shaped thing that would have I expect a diaphragm in it and thus looks like a flying saucer ?? Will look for a small switch in the area, maybe pull it and soak it in lube or something to free it up. Thanks!

Looks like this when I google it ? And that's the switch on the right in the pic ?

Yes ,that looks like it. Are you getting vacuum to the shifter? Usually it is a leaking hose that is the problem. Try switching hoses.

Yeah no problem with 4WD engaging or disengaging its the rotten indictor light that glares at us balefully regardless of what we do.
A session under the car is set for this weekend to see if we can sort it out. Cheers.
