Thinking abt upgrading rims on my MTB. I think sealed bearings would be the way to go but don't want to break the bank. Anybody have any suggestions?

Thx

So you're looking for a wheelset then? Not just "rims"? Don't count out loose ball hubs in your search. Shimano has stuck with loose ball hub design and they are found on a lot of pretty nice wheelsets at decent prices.
That being said, there are tons of sealed bearing hubs out there. I'd venture to say that they are much more common these days and are found on wheelsets at every price point. So buyer beware. Not all sealed bearing hubs are created equal. Look at DT-Swiss or WTB. Some decent wheels with sealed hubs from both those companies. LOTS of options out there.

What do you have now?

Hate to say it but not sure what's on it now. Looking at Mavic's cross wheel sets.

Mavic makes fantastic wheels. They are sure to work well for a long time and be lightweight no matter what model you choose. The only thing I don't like about Mavic wheelsets is proprietary spokes and hubs. Also, I might be mistaken but I believe they use proprietary hub bearings as well. At least they did on some hubs back when I was working on them a few years ago.

I personally like wheelsets that use standard spokes and hub flanges as well as hub bearings that can be found anywhere. That way if something needs to be replaced such as a broken spoke, it won't matter where you are, you will be able to get rolling again with the help of just about any bike shop. You could even do it yourself.
My advice is to go down to your LBS where you find the staff to be friendly and helpful and have them set you up.

Did that. Just checking for other opinions. How abt Sun? Between the 2. Which is btr

I have run shimano brand until 2 years ago... When I went with tubeless wheelsets.. I run mavic 823 / 819 and stan's flow rims.. No problem so far on any of the rims or spokes.. Hubs are shimano on a wheel set n hope on the other two sets... Both been great.

So , dumb ? But. I can keep stock rims and install sealed cartridge hubs?

As long as the new hubs have the same number of spoke holes, the same axle sizes, and disc mounts, then yes you could.

But you shouldn't. After the costs of new hubs, new spokes, and wheel building, you might as well throw new rims in the mix. It doesn't make sense not to.

Occasionally, a rider might have just the rim replaced on a wheel. This is achieved by taping the new rim next to the wheel and slowly loosening all the spokes and then moving them to the new rim, one by one. Then dishing, tensioning, and truing the rebuilt wheel. But there is no way to do such a thing with just the hubs.

Or just make it easy on yourself and buy a new, pre built wheelset.
