I just bought some new tires as winter deals are on now and my old rims would shake pretty good if I put the rear wheels up to the front and I had them in for balancing but this still didn't resolve the problem.

Now I have new tires on my 96's rims but they still shake far too much. I put them on my 99 and same problem but now the 96 is smooth. I was going to get a dial gauge and see how bad the old rims are for run-out up and down and in and out.
If I buy some 07 taco alloy rims, these seem to be the only used or take-offs available, will these fit the same as far as offset? Plus if I score a set of rims and tires with the pressure sending units in them can these be re-sold and work on other Toyota models as well?
Thanks

If you can live with the looks of the 07 taco rims on the 4rnr, the offset is the same, it's the backspacing that is a little more (on some, maybe just the fjc rims). Those who have used them on yotatech seem to be using spacers to deal with the backspacing, move the tire away from the upper control arm. Peolpe are always trying to get rid of their 01-02 rims, could probably find some cheaper than the 07s.

The backspacing on the 05+ Tacoma rims is around 5+". 3rd Gen 4Runners, 1st Gen Tacoma's, 1st Gen Tundra/Sequoia's all have the same backspacing of 4.625". I'd stick to wheels from those models. I can usually find them on craigslist for pretty cheap. Especially the Tacoma ones (16").

So I decided to do a little driveway analysis on my own. I jacked up each corner one at a time so the wheel is off the ground and set up a rubbermaid container with some wooden blocks and bricks on it with a long prybar on top and positioned it very close to the top of the tire and then spun the tire to see how much variation I had up and down. Boy was I surprised as 3 out of the 4 tires seem to have a low spot which coincided with the big wheel weight attached to the rim. I'd say about 1/5 of an inch difference. Of course I have no idea what is normal on a tire and also this is an unweighted tire but I can't help thinking no wonder things shake a bit at certain speeds.
I also positioned the tip of the pry bar to the outer edge of the rim and spun it which proved to me that the rims were very true.
So now I'm thinking the rims are fine and maybe I need to check this run out on more types of tires or just take these back. Perhaps though do tires actually wear more slowly on the low spots and eventually reduce the run out variation as it wears? If so then this would require a rebalance after a while to reduce the big weights originally used. Does anyone have any experience with just how much run out is normal on the ouitside diameter of a mounted tire? I also found that different tire shops had balancers that would measure this with a roller and another sensor for rim run out where as some are just the old balance it up even if it resembled an egg spinning around.

get some fzj80 wheels. light, strong, and looks great on a 3rd gen runner with proper backspacing to clear up to 305s.

This is exactly what I run on my 2002 SR5 4Runner. FZJ80 16x8 alloys with 305/70r16 Hankook MTs and my lift is pretty much the Sonoran Steel 1.2. I actually have quite a lot of rubbing on the frame toward the backside of the front wheels when turning at near full lock to full lock and heavy rubbing when wheeling. I also rubbed on the OEM UCAs when hitting any little bump even when street driving until I got some shaved OEM UCAs from Sonoran Steel. I don't recommend this setup without wheel spacers and I don't recommend wheel spacers so I don't recommend the FZJ80 wheels unless you stick with the 255, 265 or 285 max. You should run a wheel with less back-spacing with the larger and wider tires.

I just found some chrome steelies from an 03 Tacoma... they ought to fit just fine I believe.. wouldn't they?
