I may be importing a 91 LJ78 into the US. I plan on making any changes to meet FMVSS and may have to convert from RHD to LHD. I am looking for a good shop in Saskacthewan, however Alberta or Manitoba is ok too. If not, maybe the nearest one will have to do....Thank you for any help, I'm really looking forward to making this happen.

There is nobody in Sask I'd take that to.

Import it and drive it as a RHD, it's easy to get used to. Lots of RHD vehicles in the states, including cruisers and a lot of mail Jeeps, so it's definitely not required.

I don't mind it being RHD and would rather save the $$$, however it is not 25 years old yet and may or may not be a requirement to bring into compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards...I will talk with Toyota tomorrow to get a list of everything to bring it into compliance...The customs officer said converting it to LHD may be required.

I think you would have to spend a fortune to bring it into compliance. Sucks to say, but you're probably better off waiting or importing something that is 25 years old.

Good luck with that...if you are unaware...we have the 25yr rule down here..see ya in 2016

I would double check that RHD will be an issue. Like I said earlier, Jeep sells brand new RHD Wranglers for postal workers.
You may be right. Nothing under FMVSS says it has to be LHD or RHD for US roads, however it will depend on what Toyota says tomorrow...Some vehicles it doesn't make a difference safety wise some it does...At the least I will remove the transmission and engine and put it in my shop for three years, the price is right...

Sounds like a great cause and I look forward to seeing you bringing the cruiser stateside.

Who are you talking to at Toyota for EPA and DOT compliance? The custom guys often ask for a "letter from Toyota" that states the vehicle has met compliance with the two aforementioned entities. I have been told you need to have the vehicle "brought into compliance" or at least checked out by a RI (registered importer)

When I spoke to Toyota, they declined to give me a letter. When I spoke to customs, they told me Toyota could provide a list of things needed to be done. If I had a list with Toyota's letter head and verifiable proof the work had been done, good enough...EPA is waived after 15 years. DOT will be the focus of this venture...if I pull this off, I assure you, many more will follow.
