I am new to the 100-series Land Cruiser but have been a Ham Radio Operator for about 10 years now (General Class – call sign KB1MAU). My prior vehicle was a 2008 FJ Cruiser, and I had drilled the roof for 2 NMO antenna mounts for scanners, and ran my Amateur 2m/440 Yaesu FT-7800r to an antenna mounted on the back door using a diamond mount on the edge of the door.

For my UZJ100, I am going to probably just install the 7800 (no scanners) and have no issue drilling my roof again (having already done it on 2 other vehicles without looking back). I’m planning on running my Comet SBB-2 (maybe about 16”), and keeping my SBB-7 (about 42”) with me as a backup. The radio will be mounted under the glove box in the passenger foot well. I’ll run power directly to the battery, and mount the head remotely on the ashtray (as others have done – thank you to those who posted those helpful pictures).

My question is regarding the best location in the center of the roof to drill the hole. I know the center of the roof is best, but I want to avoid drilling into the roof only to find that I’m on top of a support beam. I would like to hear from others who have drilled their roof for NMO mounts and measurements on where you located the hole successfully. Using a point such as the edge of the sunroof and a benchmark for measurements would be helpful.

I am not big on exposed wiring, so I would also welcome any information on the best path to run the antenna cable from the roof above the headliner, down to the passenger foot well. This was easily done in my FJ Cruiser so I hope that I can figure out a similar way to run it in the UZJ100. I obviously need to avoid things like side airbags. I’m anxious to get back on the air so any help, with pictures if possible, will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, and 73’s (Regards) to all of you.

(Mods, I did search both the 100 series and Electronic Toys forums to no avail. I felt this would get better exposure on the 100 series forum but if you feel it should go to the other, please go ahead and relocate it).

I've only seen one 100 series with an NMO mount on the roof. It was towards the rear of the roof. That makes it easy to run the wires down around the rear window pillar...

I took these photos in trying to figure out where I'm going to install three NMO mounts on my 100. Obviously the sunroof is not in place so that's something to consider. The stuff put on the roof was clear of the roof braces below.

I still haven't gotten around to dropping the headliner and doing this so by all means, please beat me to this.

I installed a snorkel and therefore now have NO FM reception for my OEM head unit. What do you guys recommend that I do as for what new antenna to buy (which is the best for FM reception and/or a brand that makes quality antennas that will work for FM) Last of all where would you recommend i mount it? I know there is a kit that someone used on this forum. He took the antenna wire to this metal bracket and then had an antenna attached to that. (that posting I am unable to find again) where he mounted the steel holder on the outside/inside of the hood on the passenger side about a few feet from the Front Window. The hood was able to open and close and he had run the to wire and attached it to that. I will continue to look for this posting BUT I also would like your opinion here since you guys are experts on antennas and best places to mount them and maybe someone will know the best antenna for FM antenna. The inside antenna that mount above your rearview mirror in my experience were a huge waste of money and gave me close to zero reception. So i am looking for the best antenna mounted outside the Land Cruiser and mounted in the best place. THANK YOU for any advice and/or options it is greatly appreciated. CJ
