I had a similar sound that drove me nuts for years. Turned out to be smog pump bearings.
No smog pump here but that is something I am curious about. I did put new belts on and I can remember if the noise was there before.

Was yours only at higher rpm and under load?

I have PS, water pump, alt and ac compressor.
Alt is new ish

Do you have a return spring? Is the slave piston fully retracting into the cylinder when at rest? With the inspection cover off, is the fork vertical or does it sort of twist/rotate a little so the t/o bearing isn't parallel to the pp? I've seen where the wires/springs that retain the fork on the pivot stud were loose and the fork rotated a bit at rest and the top of the t/o bearing would just catch the pp.

Yep, only at high RPM and under load.

Yes, new return spring. Was going to try the old one for giggles.

I would say no, it is not retracting into the cylinder at rest. I have to physically move the throw out bearing back with my fingers.

I have the inspection cover off, bearing looks like it’s parallel to the fingers. I had this thought though, that maybe the top spring isn’t seated. I’ll give that a look.

Thanks for the reply

It sounds like you need a stronger return spring. In my experience the piston should fully retract into the slave at rest.

Yeah, thanks.
I’ll try a couple different ones I have on hand starting with my old one.

You can still buy the spring at your local dealer.

I have new OE spring installed. And a backup. And my old one.

I wonder if they are different strengths or lengths between the different slave (adjustable/non-adjustable, I have both) springs? These might be from my FJ62 swap.

Well, it’s not the return spring or the upper spring clip. The throw out just isn’t returning to its rest position. These pictures are both “at rest”. The one with it about 4mm away I had to reach in and pull the bearing into position.

Glad you found the issue.

clutch pedal height and master cylinder play adjusted correctly?

Edit: just saw that you did it nevermind
Appreciate you looking either way.
Spent some time on the horn with @solomrus attempting to diagnose to no avail. Then took it on a vigorous drive to attempt to figure anything out. I’m no closer…

But I’m filling my belly.

I’ve been following along on your quest to isolate the “ghost whistle”

I go through the same sequence wheeling down to the BP station for a roller dog and a slushy. When I get in the cab all “six” senses redline. I feel like a cat plugged in a 220 outlet, wide eyed and just waiting for the dog to take a sniff.

I’m certain every vintage LC has a narcissistic soul. There’s a repertoire of sound effects locked away in the glove box they play when you’re not emotionally feeding them or haven’t adjusted the valves. 🙄

I can’t hear Ms Revenge’s daily instructions (lecture) on toilet seat etiquette but, I can hear an errant squeak, ping or burp at 65mph with the top off.

Pulling for you. 🍻

Thanks Jeff.

When I’m riding along I have to clock the wind because every smell might be the engine about to grenade, but then I see a garbage truck upwind and think, “I’ll live another day.”

My wife doesn’t believe I can hear electricity in power lines. Maybe it’s because she has to ask however many times to do that thing I forget what she asked for is that a LandCruiser?

Alright…

The weird jingle/whistle/rattle noise is making me insane. To recap:

- rebuilt t-case w/new throw out bearing, pilot bearing, clutch etc… with kit from Georg @orangefj45
- Happens only over 2,500 rpm while under load
- immediately stops when clutch is depressed
- clutch adjustment done from top to bottom per the FSM
- clutch bled
- throw out bearing adjusted about 4mm off the fingers
- new spring

It really seems/sounds/feels like the TOB lightly riding on the fingers it is just so hard to diagnose.

It does seem like the TOB and fork might not be consistently returning/disengaging and maybe that’s the issue?

How do I get the fork/TOB to return consistently?

Pictures from this morning because:
