Reading some of the other vehicle forums I have noted that is is stressful on the front drive line during a hard recovery using reverse. Is this true as well for my 77 40?

I suspect if this is true then I obviously should take the time to use my winch in liew of a strap and hoursepower.

Thanks,

BigJim

No great problem for a 40, later 80 series on has issues with the front diff the way the teeth are cut makes them stronger going forward rather than in reverse, due to the high pinion I think it is.

Seen a few 80's and a 100 do front diff's trying to back out of things and snatch others out.

your birfs will hate you. your front diff however is seeing the same situation as if it were in the rear going forward since it is low pinion.

The other reason can be a weak idler shaft for reverse gear. I've heard of it happening several times (maybe rural myths) but saw it once on a NP435 or T18. Not sure if LC tranny is succeptible to this or not.
