Hi All,

Note: There are a lot of snow chain threads, but I don't know enough to know what to research...

Here's the short of it... I grew up in the desert. Absent 2 years in Colorado Springs (when Colorado was still a territory - I used chains, but have no working memory of it) and 4 years in Holland (with studded snow tires - no chains), I have spent the rest of my years in Libya, Tucson, San Antonio, Austin and Las Vegas. I have NO experience with chains.

My 40 came with new MasterCraft Courser ATX 30x9.50x15LT, load range C tires. These are NOT the tires I would have put on it and I will replace them when I can justify the expense.

But, I have to say, I'm actually quite pleased with them thus far. Excellent traction in sand, gravel, rain and mud and they ride well.

Oh! I said short of it... given my proximity to roads (especially in Utah) that require chains in snowy conditions, I would like to buy a set of chains that I will infrequently use.

I don't want to buy the best, nor do I want to spend a lot... I just want to carry a set of chains that I can put on when I absolutely have to.

Anyone??

Thanks!

Bought a set of the Heavy Truck ones for my rig. Have in the back, as required by CHP. Never needed them so far on the roads, as I just get waived by during the storms. I would pick ones with Cams, as they are easier to get tensioned. Likely medium duty twisted link would be fine if you are not planning on really using them much. Plenty to choose from with these guys for around $60. Get a set of rubber adjusters and carry bag, and you are good-to-go.

Why do you need them?

For off road use go with heavy duty.

For faster highway or dirt road travel, a lighter less aggressive chain, is more appropriate.

If you are buying new tires soon, will they be the same size? Check any chains you buy for tire size range, as they usually will fit several different size tires.

I've got 4 v-bar style ones and I live in so-cal. I use them when I go in the mts during the winter. The chains are are certainly overkill for how I use them but I worry about how all the other idiots who aren't used to driving on snow behave. I want total grip when I need to take evasive maneuvers to avoid those idiots. Yes, they weigh quite a bit.
