just over a year ago i had the engine rebuilt in my 80 series. When we put the engine back in, my engine guy noticed that the compressor made an awful noise just spinning the pulley. I bought a new AC compressor, dryer, etc. and vacuumed it out before putting it back into service. The AC worked great all last year, but about 3-4 weeks ago, it got warm one day and i turned on the AC, and noticed that it wasn't blowing cold air. I added a can of freon, it started blowing nice and cold again, and I thought all was well until i noticed a strange whining noise under the hood, and that noise is coming from the AC compressor.

I'll be honest, i don't have the time/expertise/etc. to tshoot this right now. Does anyone have a reputable AC shop in either north of Charlotte (we live in Cornelius) or S. Charlotte (i work off Arrowwood rd.) they can recommend?

Thanks
Faron

Faron: Andy Smith here. I used to work with your wife back in the 90s. Last time I saw you guys I think I still had my Defender 90. Long time, hope all is well.

From your work location I'd give Toyota Techs (J & M Automotive) a try. They are two exits south of you on 77, off Carowinds Blvd. Mark Enos and Johnny Croft own / run the place and know their way around Land Cruisers. I've had Mark do a good bit of work for me lately, was there again just this week. They aren't an "AC only shop" per se but no one in this area knows Land Cruisers like they do.

Who rebuilt your engine?

If it is just the clutch making the noise. You can chsnge the clutch without taking the refrigerant out. I just did it in my 4runner. No more than $150 in parts.

thanks

thanks guys--Andy, i had a bad experience with Toyota Techs years ago, and haven't been back.

My engine was rebuilt by the father-in-law of a good friend, he's a retired NASCAR guy (he was a big time crew chief ~20 yrs ago) who's raced everything from dragsters to boats, and he's been rebuilding engines since he was a teenager. My buddy and i did most of the work of pulling & replacing the engine, which saved me a lot of $, and it's been running great ever since (except for the AC, which is my fault <g>)
