Hi all,

My '87 BJ71 has a cooked synchro on 3rd gear. Up shift is fine, downshift into it is no good unless rev matching or resting next to 2nd gear and popping it up again.

I've been looking out for a replacement box for a while, and one came up last night.

It's off a 1983 60 series with a 3B motor. It also states that it has a mechanical engagement transfer case. As far as I'm aware, my transfer case is vacuum operated.

Will this h55f fit my truck? Can I just swap my bell housing and transfer case over to the new box or is it not that simple??

Cheers

There's a few variants of the H55, the most notable occurring late '85, that may not preclude using behind the late 3B, but might (**) with the later split case, apart from mechanical or vacuum engaged.

It'd mate to later bell housing, but don't know that it will the later split case.

Out of curiosity, have you considered rebuilding the current H55?

I paid to do, to qualify myself, but was stated not too bad a job, there's aftermarket kits available that are affordable (except syncros which are said best to replace with OEs) and I'd think cheaper than a used gearbox, at least, here it probably would be for the 3B.

Cheers for the reply @Delancy

I had considered the recon option but I wasn't sure what bits are available to purchase these days. I've found Toyota NZ to be hopeless.. If you aren't driving a VDJ7X they don't want to know you!

My truck has a 13BT in but is the B series the same bell housing throughout?

It's my daily driver and with my job I need it everyday to cart my tools about. I'll look into some synchro parts online.

Check these "stockists" out:

Used a Terrain Tamer +'85 H55 Gearbox Kit, along with the corresponding Transfer Case Kit on a very recent rebuild and an inclusive kit with quality bearings and good seals.

I don't know if TT offers syncros, but it'd be worth asking, as well, if they're OEM. Personally, I have no experience with aftermarket syncros, only regurgitating what I've read, being they're not worth the savings, considering the effort to replace failures they are reported probe to.
