First off, Hello All! I have been enjoying this forum for a while, lots of very helpful and informative info on here! Thanks for that!

Now to the FIASCO, After purchasing a 2005 Hundy about a year and a half ago which came with two keys one remote key (master) and one non remote (master) or so I believe from everything I have read on here about the security light, last weekend someone stole my keys. (Yeah doesn't make sense to me either.) So, now I have only the non-remote key. After a visit to the local Stealership to see about getting a new key they quoted $330 (which seemed outrageous) I bought two remote keys online for $170. But know the same Stealership says that they cannot program a new key from my key because it is an aftermarket key not the original. And wanted to charge $220 + tax to reboot the ECU.

After contacting another Toyota Dealer (who said $250 for a new key) he says that the only thing that matters is that it is a master key. and says for $69.95 he can program a new key.

So, is there any truth to what these guys are telling me? Have any of you guys/gals been through this Hoopla before? I have Searched and read every thread that I could find but nothing that really discussed this particular scenario. Sorry for the long post! :bang:

Cheers!

not sure this will help but i needed a spare and took my remote master key in and they cut ( i wanted the budget master deal) a non remote master and hooked it up, programmed etc, on the spot, in the service bay, and off i went for 32.00 i believe the rec stated, w a new master key.

If you have a true non-remote master and if the remote keys you purchased are the right keys, it should just be programming the new keys, no ECU issue. When I was selling service, I always quoted the worst case scenario when someone came in with their own keys though.... Sometimes it wouldn't take and the tech would spend a lot of time messing with it.

I had one remote master when I bought my 99 TLC this summer. purchased another through ebay (mudder gave me a link), then followed the online hokey-pokey instructions and programmed it after getting a free cut from the dealership. All the instructions and programming worked the first time. I'm going to get a non remote starter as a back-up to keep with the vehicle. IF you are concerned about cost, look up the instructions for self programming. It isn't hard.
