My friend is selling his 1991 Land Cruiser and I want it. Problem is he and his "mechanic friend" removed the distributor because it was toasted. Unfortunately for them and me, they removed the old one and weren't successful at replacing it with a new one. He said the new one just wouldn't fit. They returned the part thinking it was the incorrect part and with the 2nd replacement part were still unsuccessful. He showed me the old distributor that came out and the gear on the top end has broken teeth and it didn't turn easily, so I do believe this is what failed, but I also noticed the bottom end (the shaft that goes into the engine) wasn't squared on the end. He said the new parts were perfectly squared on the ends even though the one he took out looked worn and beveled... I'm clueless why a new one wouldn't fit in the old ones place. Is that an indicator of something else being broken inside the engine or are they just failing to install the new part correctly?

How do I sort this problem out? What's likely the problem and what's a worse case scenario?

Thanks in advance,

Chad
