Has anyone ever removed any of the window molding and repainted it? Mine are plastic coated metal and the one in the rear under the slider window is in terrible shape! I want to take it off and rustoelum it but I don't want to damage it in the process.

I removed the door mouldings. They are held on by 4-5 plastic clips. Just pry up and the moulding will come off. I had to get some new clips to replace the ones that broke. I would imagine the rear quarter moulding is the same deal.

So I'm likely going to break some? Do you know where to get new ones? Maybe I will get a bunch first before I take them off...

I am not positive, but I thought the windows had to come out to deal with the metal window sills. The windows are easy to get out and then back in.

I'm not talking about the sills. Although they might need attention in the future-The part I'm talking about is called the quarter belt molding. It sits outside of sill further away from the window.

I'm sure CDAN @ American Toyota can hook you up with the clips. If you are careful the clips may not break. I would try to remove it first. Wish I had a spare clip to take a pic of. The moulding has a channel which holds the clips. The other side pops in to a hole in the body of the truck.

As far as the doors are concerned you can just put the windows down to remove those mouldings.

I'm trying to figure out how to replace the side vent louver, also in your picture. The front edge need to be under the sliding window rubber gasket - can't seem to be able to get this.

The vent louvre just comes straight out I think. Mine fell out once after some poor quality auto body work. They just popped it back in.

Thats what I thought too. It has 2 round plastic clips, one on top and one middle, that pop in. The bottom side has a threaded bolt which you have to attach a nut on from reaching from the inside. Got all this but couldn't get the front edge to sit under the window gasket like it was originally. I paid $70 for the louver and don't want to f it up. I was already bending it pretty good while trying to seat it. Maybe it's time to give it another try...

Problem with having the louver off is water gets in the static air vent and pool inside the rear quarter panel. This is obviously a bad thing.

I bit the bullit and took it off. 1996Landcruiser was right. There are 5 platic clips holding it on. It came off incredibly easy. All you need to do is pry with a flathead screw driver gently in an upwards motion starting at one end and going to the other. You will hear the clips disconect from the molding with a distinctive click and your done.

I tried to sand mine down and rustoleum it but it still looks like hell. Plastic coated metal? Whatever idiot came up with that idea probably drove a Range Rover. :flipoff2:

Yeah water pooling anywhere is obviously a bad thing. If you can't get it on I'd take it to a body shop and get it done. Couldn't cost too much. I don't remember it taking them too long to put mine on. 5 minutes?

Another thing to be aware of is that there is a plastic gasket that runs the length of that louvre that comes diconected sometimes. Mine did and was flapping the the wind on the highway. I threw a little silicone on it and it's holding up well.

My problem here

If you havn't fixed it yet here is a link to my repiar, which was a leak in the clip hole you are talking about.

I also had to replace the rear vent panel seal that was leaking. I ended up breaking both sides of the middle tab on the the plastic cover while removing. They still hold on with the screw and top tab, but be careful removing them. I ended up using butyl tape to seal all the leaks on the old crusty gaskets on the vent baffle tube.
