Last Sunday I finally decided to mount an old CB that I had boxed up in our HZJ77. I'd long ago lost the standard mounting bracket and thought about bending up a new one. I wanted the unit to be removeable even though it's probably only worth about 5 bucks (still reason enough for some strung out tweaker dope fiend kid to break a window). Half an hour of farting around with the bender and I came up with this. The 5/16" round stock loop slides into the stock ashtray location. I made a funky horseshoe at the back to support the rear weight of the CB plus I just wanted to see if I could bend the flat bar on edge. :hillbilly: I pop riveted to the top of the CB case instead of going to the normal side mounting points because it seemed easier at the time...in hindsight it probably wasn't. The cigarette lighter is fed constant 12V power from the 24V/12V converter and the CB plugs into it.

Later it dawned on me that if you're willing to lose the ashtray, you could fab up a mount for CB, GPS, coffee cup, cell phone, IPOD or whatever using the same principle and without putting screw holes in the dash. Hope this works for someone else as well as it does for me.

Cheers

I think its pretty much perfect for a quick-connect/disconnect unit. I'm not generally fond of temporary installs, but this one works for the intended purpose.

I definitely wouldn't use the cig-lighter for a ham radio, but if the CB is not modded and you're only getting 5w in and 4w out, then its no more than a typical cell phone/ipod so it should be no problem.

Where is the antenna coax feed? I guess you could fish it behind the dash from the firewall grommet and up into the ashtray opening for a really clean look - then just push it back into the ashtray opening when not in use!

Antenna coax is routed thru the dash and pops out of the plastic console that surrounds the shift lever...where the mic sits in the pic. Nothing high tech, just a means of contact for the jeeper buds when they need the strap.

That's pretty awesome especially for guys like me that DD their rigs and don't need all of this extra stuff hanging around that could break during day to day use.

I wonder how well it would work in a 60??
