Hello there. I am new to the forum and just wanted to say hello. I have a 94' fj80, OME heavy f/r, 285 mtrs, arb front bumber with warn 12000 and a snorkel. The question that I have is if anyone has ever tried relocting the parking brake handle up under the dash as they were in the old Toyota pickups? Girlfriend is wanting a place to lay down on long trips and I am thinking that isn't a bad idea. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

"Girlfriend is wanting a place to lay down"

so that what you call it... lol

Is this a trick question?

You would need to move the console along with moving the parking brake handle. I don't think you would have as much room nor be as comfortable as laying in the back seat or reclining the front passenger seat.

But to answer your question, I have not heard of anyone that has moved the e-brake.

Yaa what -B- said. If you do a search this topic has been kicked around a couple of times but AFAIK no one has performed this mod. How is moving the e-brake gonna make for a place to lay down?

Oh yaa :flipoff2:

better question...where the hell is your parking brake handle? did your 80 come with the parking-brake-in-the-seat-back option?

Okay, I kind of figured you all would see through that, but trying to keep the forum family friendly. Thanks for the advice guys.

Even if you could move the handle and actually find a comfortable way to "lay down" I would say that is risky at best. I had a friend who was sleeping sides ways in the back seat of a full size Blazer, he was ejected out of the truck when the driver ran off the road. Buddy broke his back in many places and is lucky to be alive ..... the driver and passenger, both with seatbelts in proper use, came out with scratches.

Bottom line, recline the seat a little and keep the belt on.

I didn't really like the location of the parking brake (under dash).
I don't have really long legs, but my knee and/or shin kept hitting it when it was engaged. And on the trail, I couldn't use it because it would hit my knee/shin.

Look into a drawer system for the back, you can get an extension for it and then the back makes an almost queen size bed. :D

And yes we saw right thru dat.

Then you should have posted this in chat.

Sorry about that. Didn't realize there was a chat. Can anyone point me to it? Thanks again folks.

I know this is moving to chat, and for what it's worth i will share this quick story. I know we have all had or wanted our better halves to "lay down" while driving. However, i had a co-worker have his girlfriend "lay down" while he was driving. THey had a car accident while she was laying down. It killed her and seriously injured him. He is now in jail for manslaughter since he "instructed her to take her seatbelt off" so she could "lay down".

I say leave the parking brake and center console in place. Lay down in the back while parked.

Under dash is also a clumsy reach in an emergency.

Just park the LC off the road in a secluded area if you prefer. Release the parking break and have her "lay down. It's safer that way.

For the thrill seeker, stay under 20 mph if she's "laying down" and it's still safe.

11 years ago I was driving and Isuzu P/U with the parking brake handle on the lower right side of the steering column on the dash. I was on the interstate and had a 18 wheeler change lanes on top of me and I hit a light pole, then a speed limit sign (2 6x6 wooden posts) head on. The only injury I had was my right knee hit that handle. Since then I have never been a fan or that location.
