Have been looking for an 80. I have some bad luck - missed some good buys - now getting frustrated - finding lots of 5/6 owner vehicles, so I was thinking of upgradeing the mindset to a 100. Need do a lot of backroad safari travel in deep Baja and I'm worried about reliability and breaking down in the wild with all the electronics and computers and stuff. I always do my own servicicng and I am a bit intimidated by the sci-fi bits. How do owners feel about this? Will these trucks go 4,000 miles in off-road conditions with no maintainance and not breakdown?

In a sense, I'd be more worried about a used 80 w/ low miles. Either it spent all the time garaged and pampered, or it was driven entirely in stop & go traffic, lots of idling (severe conditions) w/ little maintenance. OTOH, if the rig has high miles (say 150K), if it had heating/HG problems, they would have occurred long beforehand and probably reoccurred long before the vehicle attained 150K miles (or vehicle was sold ASAP). Recently, it seems a number of low mileage 80s (60-90K mi) have blown their head gaskets. I was also looking for an 80 at one point, but getting a good one is hit and miss, plus the leg room was too tight for my liking.

In terms of mechanical dependability, the 100 scored higher than the 80. As for "feature and accessory" dependability. Both 80 and 100 were rated equal. If you aren't into rock crawling, I'd seriously consider a 100.
