<<WARNING- confusion ahead- turn back now!!>>

So it's time for tires for my 80. When I bought it, it was lifted, so I regeared it with 4.88's with the idea of going to military 37"'s and recentered 16.5" hummer wheels. The cost of going that route is fairly comparable to going with 35 or 36" tires for my original wheels, so I'm still undecided. The mil tires have mized reviews, as do the recentered wheels. conversely, there are limited choices for 37" tires on 16" wheels.

In trying to come up with the best balance of cost vs. performance vs. tire life, I'm lost.

I've considered the pro's and con's as follows:

going with mil tires (MTR's or Baja's) and recentered wheels gets me the tire size I want (pro) in a relatively aggressive tread (pro) with a reported good tire life (pro), wuth with questionable performance (con) and with possibly difficult to balance set up(con). another pro is while initial cost is typical, replacement when worn is cheaper, assuming that the tires will continue to be available in the next few years (or I buy another set soon).

Going with 36" TSL's can be had for kind of cheap, and performance is outstanding, but they would only last at most, a couple years.

going with Toyo MT's is expensive in 37", moderate in 315's, but not the size I want. I don't know who long they last.

Cooper MT's in 315's are an alternative to above, but again, not the 37" I want.

Now reasoning for 36-37" tires. I'm overgeared by around 10%. My worn BFG AT 315s have me running 3000rpm at 70mph. I want something a bit bigger than 315's (34"- not really 35") to bring the RPM's down.

The kind of wheeling I do is mostly mild, but with a bull headedness. I don't go out looking for rocks to climb, but if I want to get past them, then I want to be able to. I don't seek mud, but it won't stop me. More often than not, I'm in rooty, sidewall risking terrain that could rip a chunk out of the side before anything else. I drive the truck close to 50/50 street/trail. It's becoming more dedicated trail truck, but it's more enjoyable to drive than my 4Runner, so it's hard not to drive to work a couple times a week (60 mile round trip)

So, can anyone recommend the military tires over any of the other options?

just $0.02 worth, Familiar with the recentered hummies and the out spec mil tires. Balancing isn't really possible, and matching sets is the same. I think they're exceptional off pavement, but even with hearing protection and kidney belt, they're gonna' beat you up on pavement, and beat up your rig too, exceptional unsprung weight adds up to 'out of round' forces on your whole drivetrain.

If its a trail truck then why not TSLs?

The only reason I'm hesitant about TSL's is if I'm spending 12-1500 on tires, I want them to last more than a year.
