How'd you all achieve it? woody, you ran a stock 4 speed didn't you for a time...

what's the cheapest way to get some lower gearing? diffs? T case?

Depends on what you call "cheap"

SM420 is typically the easiest way without spending a ton of money

Woody ran a SM465.

I run a sm420, and dual mini tcases.

I did the SM420.
Got some deals on some parts.
I got a new old stock SM420 transmission for $380
used Mike Smythe Adapter plate for $50
Bellhousing and front 3 spd driveshaft and a transition gear for the 4 sped case from Cruiser Outfitters for $160
Index Ring, T/) bearing adatper and pilot bearing from Classic Cruisers for about $50.
I had the 4 speed tranny shifter modified for the SM420 for a 6er of beer.

Total was about $640 for 56:1 crawl ratio.

oh yeah, shame sm420's aren't cheap in australia.

basically i have a h41 and single piece case

getttng a h41 with split case (only 1.9:1 not te=he 2.4:1 gearset) for nothing...

Well, then tell us your limitations of what you CAN do before we tell you what is the "cheapest"..........

Can't remember where I read it, Mud, Pirate, Outerlimits or in a magazine but I seem to recall somebody using 3-speed t/case gears to achieve lower gearing. In the same thread/article they were using an aftermaket case but I think you can just use the standard case?

diffs - gears dont cost TOO much and are a fairly easy install...

also, keep the one piece case and put in three speed gears - some say it isnt much but I definately noticed the improvement when I installed mine.

Ditto, with the addition of 4:88's in the diffs. May not be the "cheapests" option out there, but no adapters, or driveshaft mods needed.

low gear = high dollar i put a lot of pretty pennys in my toybox with 4:70:1 but well worth it with two t cases i have got a lot of options with a 4 speed. i love it and so does my birfields alot less brakes, well in my mind anyway

it seems to me running dual mini cases and a centered rear would be cheaper than buying a rock box if you can fab well, but toybox is definatly easy to install

Yes you can...just call Marlin.

Bang for the buck in your kneck of the woods, I would go Orion with your H41.....as long as you have a one-piece case, or you could find a 16 spline mainshaft...

Marks4x4 over there offers low gear sets for the split case if you are running one of them.


There is no such thing as cheap gearing.....

When I did my rig, it cost me about $450 extra to add a np203 between my 700R4 and 3sp case.

yeah i'm not keen on keeping the single piece case... i've just done my 4th one (idler shaft collapsed... case is still in one piece, but who knows how weak)

was thinking marks gears.
