Hey all, I'm trying to put together a recovery kit suitable for the LX470/100 series. Our vehicles are so heavy comparatively, so I figured I'd post in here, as most of the info in the recovery forum seems to relate to smaller cruisers. I'm going to get myself a high lift, and learn to use it. I don't have a winch, and often travel solo, which means I may have to use the high lift as a winch (no one to snatch me). The winch kit for the high lift sounds pretty flimsy for vehicles of our weight, so I think I'd rather put together my own kit. What working weight do you guys suggest for shackles? They will be used for winching and dynamic recovery on the odd occasion that I go mudding with friends. It doesn't seem that 3/4 shackles would be strong enough for our big vehicles. Would you suggest chains for winching, or webbing? What weights should they be rated for? What snatch strap rating is ideal? I know you want some stretch in there for it to work properly, I'm thinking 24,000#, or would the lighter 17,500# work better? What is the preferred way to attach to a trailer hitch? I don't have any other suitable recovery points yet, I've seen videos where people put the snatch strap in the hitch and just a pin through it, and others that use a shackle in the hitch. What's best? A lot of questions, I know...

Go to the "winching and recovery" section in the General Forum here on mud. Much good info there, will keep you reading for days.

Do the 100-series weigh more than the 80s? I always thought they were around the same weight, but I have no proof or real numbers to backup my presumption.

I have 3/4" shackles used on a Bradley Fighting Vehicle...I think you probably should be OK, maybe...

Problem is, most of the info in the recovery section relates to smaller cruisers. So, uhm, maybe it's because the hundys are always free and pulling you guys out? :p

If you read you will find threads that explain safety factor that are independent of the weight of the truck.
