Yo (ta),

I'm restoring my '89 62, and while I'm having the under carraige cleaned, OME installed, etc., I'm thinking about ditching the ratty looking replacement (midas-ize me) exhaust.

Any recommendations for exhuast that will improve performance and stay clean?undefined

i'm kind of in the same boat with my little brother's fj60. anyway- i spoke with the exhaust pro at a local muffler shop today and he told me the ins and outs of some different exhaust systems. you want something that isn't restrictive. he says that the exhaust pipe itself should be 2.5 inches. the one i have now is 2.25. he also explained that the old catalytic converters are quite restrictive, but they have newer ones designed to cut down the restriction. go with a flowmaster muffler. the great thing about getting the higher line converter and muffler is that they both carry a lifetime warantee. sounded good to me. like i said it's my little brother's cruiser and he is a poor high schooler, otherwise we would put a header on there. i like the two piece headers and the 6-1 ceramic that man-a-fre makes. it's spendy, but it's cool-and hey isn't that what we're all after? hehe.

or you could throw in a 350 over the weekend (haha) and get some cheap ceramic coated block hugger headers. what a way to save money!!

Search the threads on the header thing, if you're going to go that route. SOR makes a 2 peice header that's decent, but the man-a-fre is supposed to cause problems, IIRC.

As for the rest of it, I'd go stainless steel with a high-flo cat. The cat will cost you a little more, but would be worth it, I'm guessing. Not sure about the muffler though. I had mine redone earlier this year with just whatever the muffler shop threw on it...but then again, I've got a really good local muffler shop that does outstanding work and they really know thier stuff.

Best advice is to find a shop like that - someone local, a single shop that other mechanics recommend that has a good rep. They don't have to do tons of custom work or just hot rod work, just really know their stuff. (Look for old guys working there :D)

Go to a heavy truck (semi truck) wrecking yard and buy a exhaust stack. Run it next to the passenger side a pillar.... That'd be kewl....

3FE headers

I've had MAF 3FE headers on for almost 2 years. They provide better off the line pick-up but the generate mucho, mucho heat - the carb cooling fan runs regularly. They drop in is as snap, they directly replace the cast iron exhaust manifolds but the heat shields can not be reinstalled and I probably could have reused the EGR tube. MAF seems to be the only source for the 3FE headers BTW. I ordered mine from TJO who had them drop shipped from the manufacturer - they arrived 4 weeks later (1 week late) direct from MAF. They look great, have added a little power, opened up the engine compartment and since I had to replace the manifold gasket anyway due to a leak between 5 - 6 I figured WTF. Are they worth the $400 - don't know but if you're going to have to drop $100 to true your existing manifolds then maybe. Just my $.02.
