Hello all, I just tackled a large project on my 1989 FJ62.

I replaced the throttle cable (aka kickdown cable)
And rebuilt the valve body in the auto transmission with new gaskets from Toyota.

But today, when I went to finish the project, I filled it up with 2 gallons of Amsoil synthetic ATF, did a flush of the remaining fluid, then filled it up with 2 more gallons of ATF resulting in 4 new gallons of ATF

Here is the problem...

When i got to shift the transmission into gear, I have no engagement! On any gear... R,D,3,2, or 1.

I used the Toyota FSM for the A440F so im fairly certain i assembled it correctly.

The fluid is reading at a correct level.

My concern is that while rebuilding the valve body, a foreign object (IE: old gasket material) got stuck in one of the valve passages and is not allowing the fluid to circulate properly.

I do not want to have to drop the pan again and drain the $200 of new fluid that I just added.

Here are the toyota parts that I used and replaced...

Parts:
35520-60050 Cable assembly, throttle 79.82
35168-36010 Gasket, Automatic transmission oil pan 20.94
35339-60020 Gasket, Oil strainer 11.99
12157-10010 Drain plug Crush washer 2.79
35433-36010 Gasket, Valve body # 1 14.15
35434-36010 Gasket, Valve body # 2 14.15
35435-36011 Gasket, Valve body plate #3 12.03
35436-36011 Gasket, Valve body plate #4 12.03
35223-36010 Gasket, Lock up relay valve body 6.49

Here are some pictures so you can all see what this all looks like...

RocDoc!
You are just the person I had in mind when posting this....

I checked out that other thread you linked and I am experiencing the same problem with the gear shift not going into the "1" position.

I am going to take another look at the FSM for the chassis/drivetrain and plan on dropping the pan again tomorrow

I'm fairly sure I slid that manual valve all the way into the valve body, suggesting I'm having the same problem you did...

Thanks, I will report back when I smell of ATF...

I found the pages in the Chassis/drivetrain FSM that show how to line it up. The A440F FSM does not include the same illustration... WTF?

First pic is what it shows in the A440F FSM...

Second pic shows how it is supposed to be in the Chassis/drivetrain FSM...

Third pic is from RocDoc's thread showing the manual valve and the pin that slots into it...

Thanks, I will report back when I smell of ATF...

 I was there a couple days ago when I decided to put some syn ATF in my power steering and cut the dino that's in my tranny now with a few quarts of syn. Seems you can't work with ATF without it running and seeping everywhere. Oh well, at least it smells better than gear oil.

Were you able to reuse the cork gasket on the trans oil pan after dropping it again?

I think so.....

@hotwire_one
Then what happened?

Yes, a 12 year old thread.
He was around here last week so, figured I’d ask.

I’m having transmission problems and am finding so many dead threads…
