Man if it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have any luck at all. Got home today from work, walked in the house, came back out to retrieve somethinng out of the cruiser and lo and behold, there is a drip, drip, drip, etc. under the cruiser. By the time it was all said and done, there was a plate size spot of oil coming from what I assume is the rear main. Don't know a whole lot about vehicles but crawled under it and it is definetly from the rear of the motor/front of the tranny area. It has been dripping a few drops here and there, nothing major, just from what I understand to be a pretty common thing on the LC, but this isn't looking so great. Now that I have you guys attention, what should I do? Should I take it in the maybe Urban Land Cruisers in atlanta and let them fix the leak or should I go ahead and bite the bullet and have them put a 5 speed in while they are at it. I was hoping to put it off as long as possible until I could get ahead a little bit on the finances but I don't want to pay alot of money 2x. I mean, doesn't it cost a pretty good bit to have someone drop the tranny to repair the rear main?

If you are sure it's engine oil, make sure it's really the rear main. My money would be on the pan gasket at the rear of the engine but lots of things can leak in an old 2F. To start, pull the inspection cover over the clutch and see if you can visualize where the oil is leaking out. Trace it carefully so you don't fix something that isn't broken. The pan gasket can be replacedd without much tear down, the rear main requires that you pull the tranny/ transfer and disassemble the clutch. Pull the inspection cover and let us know what you find.

I don't think it will be 2K to do the rear main. Check with ULC or another shop and see.

Make sure the inspection plate on the side of the motor isn't the problem. It's on the passenger side of the motor, behind the plug wires such. It is the length of the motor. I have seen motors with several bolts that weren't hand tight. The oil makes it's way back to the back of the motor and can seem like a rear main.
