Just got the word from the shop that the rear diff on the 4runner is bad and needs to be replaced. I believe them because it roars like crazy. He said more than likely it is the pinion bearing. This job is out of my league, but I'm looking for anyone's help on where to get a good used one / re manufactured. They quoted ~$2K for the whole job (parts and labor). I'm waiting for a call back from them to see what they charge to just R&R. Then see how cheap I can get a good used one / reman. I think if I can get this whole job done ~$1K I might do it, but after that it doesn't seem worth it anymore with 155K miles and there are some other issues such as PS leak that I don't think it cheap.

Not a good start to the week finding this $$$ out on this job. I was hoping $1K for this and a few other minor items I was going to have them do.

Let me know if you know a good place to order reman rear ends. I'm also going to check classifieds here.

BTW: I'm in NC so shipping cost becomes a factor as well for this large of a part.

Thats no good... I'm sure you could find one at a junk yard or one of the other forums- yotatech.com or toyota-forum.org. Have you checked out what it would cost you to just keep the rear and do a re-gear? You'd have to do the front also but I would think it would be cheaper to go that route, Ive looked up the parts on ebay and they werent bad price wise.

I've decided I'm going to take it to a shop locally that said they would remove it and rebuild and reinstall for $1K. They are a Rover shop, but highly recommended by a friend that takes his Toyota there all the time so I feel good about it.
