Each year I go through the same problem of removing the rear diff filler plug. Even with a 15/16 six sided socket it still seems to slip off, and end up having to use a persuader to get the plug out.

Looking for a solution and a better type of plug I found a company called www.powerenhancer.co.uk, they sell smart plugs The one that fits the rear diff is Part Number: Smart 695078811946.

What I liked about the plug is when you start to insert it and you reach the o ring it feels like you are tightening a nylock nut. The washer supplied is much bigger in diameter and covers a greater surface area.

The next oil change should be more straightforward Because of the greater depth of the hex head (10mm) no more sockets slipping off.

If you go through the same problems the smart plug may be worth considering as it certainly works for me.

Can you use a front diff fill plug with a 10 mm Allen wrench?

Steve

Have only done the rear diff as it was always a problem to remove. With the new Smart Plug, no more problems of undoing the plug.
I will look at the front diff to see if there is a suitable Smart Plug. Do you know the thread size on the front diff?

Smart Plugs are also available in the States. http://www.smart-o.info/

Its the drain plug that has the magnet, I only replaced the filler plug. Sorry if I didnt make this clear.

Thread is the same as the rear plug. I suggested using OEM front fill plug since it uses a 10mm Allen wrench to remove...you won't need a "Smart Plug".

The only reason I might consider using a Smart Plug is the extra security provided by the O ring. Would like to use them on the drain plugs But I don't think they do them with magnets.

It seems that there are quite a few on the forum that like me, have had trouble with the bad design of the fill plug, the new plug has solved the problem. I now don't dread the time when an oil change is due. Just to be clear, I am not affiliated to Smart Plug in any way. I have purchased a couple of plugs from them and they are good quality and well made.

FYI: The smart-O website lists walmart as a dealer.

The use smart_o for replacement plugs on oil changes.

They could not be persuaded to sell 2 to me
