I think it is an interesting design. Years ago I used a bolt on swing down tire carrier, which does have advantages compare to a swing out. I do have a couple of comments:

1) It would look nicer if the outside of the wheel faced out, but it would require a different shape to the carrier frame.

2) I would recommend adding a traction spring to help with lifting the carrier and tire. Something like this at the bottom of the page... McMaster-Carr

Cool man - I imagine the plastic end caps will fit back up in there??

I saw it over at Jerry's, his craftsmanship is superb.

I do not care for it from a design standpoint. Seems there's zero rear visibility, it will be a PITA to lower and raise, and using the rear hatch will be virtually impossible even when it's down. The tradeoffs may be worth it to you, but I could never sacrifice all of that.

Functionally the concept is great. Getting the spare secured, getting a ladder, and having accessory mounts is great. As long as it's what you wanted and you are happy with the functionality, that's all that counts really.

Ditto, what Joe said, I use the tailgate too much as a playground and shoe changing area for Lily!

But that's the good thing of doing it yourself. It's different than anybody else's, and you make it to what YOU want, regardless of what others say. Necessity is the mother of invention...

I enjoyed working this up for Mihai. He had some specific needs as well as parameters he wanted to keep within. So, this is what we came up with. We talked about raising/lowering every time for rear access and I've got a couple different gas struts I'd like to add. I've got to look around it now that its installed to see if I can find a place to mount it.

But, yes, there is no way something like this would work for those with kids and dogs who might be jumping in/out every stop, having to drop/lift it many times a day.

My thoughts exactly.

After all is said and done I am suprised at how easy it is to actually lift this thing.
The bushings combined with the pivot point the ladder provides makes it easier than it looks in pictures.
The gas strut placement and roof rack brace is in the works still...

This will only add protection to any of these uncw fools looking to jack my subwoofers ;)
