Have installed new wheel bearings in my Bj 74 rear axle. Having concerns with the torque on the rear axle lock nut on the short axle side. When it comes to aligning the axle housing slots with one of the adjusting nut slots I am getting 42 ft lbs torque on the lock nut. My preload is just under 8 lb.

Iam more or less following the procedure outlined in the FSM for FJ40/ 43/ 45/ 60 seriers, BJ40/ 42/ 43/ 45 /46 /60 series and HJ47 /60 series Iam thinking this is the same for the BJ 73.

Torque the lock nut up 43ftlbs while rotating back and forth retighten to 43 ftlbs then back off until rotated by hand then tighten up until there is no play in bearings then measure preload I then give the tyre a few hefty whacks with a slege hammer check for any play then line up the slots by further tighting the lock nut. then measure preload again.

The other side went according to plan . but when I did the short side I had to tighten up the lock nut more than the other side when lining up the slots. So I put the torque wrench on the locking nut and was surprised with the reading.

Has any one had this issue I have trippled checked everything and still get the same result. I have done a few rear axle bearing on 60 series and 40 series and can't recall anything unusual.

would like to hear your thoughts.

Cheers
Gary
