I am trying to do brakes, and am hung up on removing my wheels!!!!!!! WTF? I broke the lug nuts loose before jacking up. Then after jacking up tried removing them all evenly. But towards the end of one it seemed cross threaded? So I forced it off like a dumb ass. Then another one is acting like it is cross threaded...but I am removing and they are like seized or something..

My only thought is the wheel pressure on the lugs is messing me up!

Any tips before I screw up anything else????? I still can't get the wheel off, because a couple are acting cross threaded.

I had a similar situation and broke 4. I attributed to a tire rotation I had done at Discount Tire and they overtorqued the lugs. There is not really a secret to getting them off. Try tightening them a little then backing them off again. Unfortunately, it sounds like you will be breaking some studs. I even tried some PB Blaster to help me out, but it did not help. The rear are at least really simple to replace.

Thanks for your advice.

I am just on the passenger rear right now, and it looks like 3 are screwed up. I have an impact going, and they aren't budging. This is ridiculous that someone can mess up lugs and studs. They are so simple...I have always been able to get lugnuts off, normally by hand after you break them loose.

So, from what I am getting I should just order new ones tomorrow, and park the cruiser till I get some new studs and lugnuts and replace them all?

It is $5 a stud, not sure what hte price of lugnuts are.

Any other suggestions for getting these last two removed beside a breaker bar?
Can I do anymore damage than has already been done?

Hi, Id be replacing all if 3 are bad on one wheel. THis was a dumb mistake on someones part, costly for you too. I drive the tire stores crazy but I insist on proper torque. MIke

I just used some force and broke mine all off. No way to really damage anything further. The lug nuts are a few bucks each, also.

I broke two lug nuts just now, and one is cross threaded, so I will be replacing some of them, if not all on that wheel. The wheel is off. Parts can be here Tuesday. Nobody in town has them. I will now try doing the brakes while it is just sitting in the drive way!

Thanks for the help. I will try using an impact to remove them evenly on the other rear wheel.

I honestly never touch my Lugs with an impact. I do everything by hand, then using the oem lug tool, then torque wrench. While it is frustrating, the lug nuts can strip pretty easily if you dont pay attention.

P.s.

If you havnt figured out how to remove your hub yet, read the other thread you posted in. Craig and I finally figured it out.

I had a similar issue today. Big-O tire rotated my tires a few weeks ago. They admitted to and replaced one lug. Today, when we went to install some 866 springs, we found a nice little surprise. They cross threaded a lug which we had to break to get the tire off. It took Jonathan and I 4 hours to replace the stud. Getting the rear rotor off was a major PIA. See the other RTH thread for more info.

It appears a few people had similar issues today.. Almost as if the cruiser gods were looking down on us laughing at us struggling with lugs, studs and rotors!

Discount Tire takes this risk in trade for speed. They did not question mine, handed me cash with my receipt. The studs are cheap and easy to find, the Toyota nuts are pricey.
Tools needed, a BFH and a very large breaker bar, shatter like glass as another poster said. I really had to wail on mine but they pop out eventually.

I will be going to start this repair with FINISHING THE REPAIR in mind tomorrow (pending e brake parts needed). I have studs and lug nuts...and a few hours time. I am hoping this is NOT a regularly occurring problem...but a few of us had to deal with it today huh. Oh well. 170K miles and a luxery, reliable vehicle, I guess I can do this repair and be on the road again soon hopefully.
Thanks for all the help.
