I'm no pro compared to others here, but I've experienced a little grinding noise if the T case does not fully engage in and out of 2wd, 4h and 4 l.
I've learned to really make sure t case is "all the way over" meaning not in between or almost engaged before putting the truck in motion.
Not sure if that makes technical sense or even applies to what happen, but thought it might be another idea for you to consider.
I can very confidently confirm that simply leaving hubs in locked position but t case in 2wd will not cause an issue because I just took off drive flanges that essentially are like having hubs locked all the time. Obviously not ideal, but I can't imagine it tearing up anything too bad.
