i have 89 62 that at times will randomly drop idle when it starts. it gets down to about 500 where it will sputter and jutter as if it wants to die but wont quite die. sometimes giving it a quick pump of the gas pedal will solve the problem sometimes it wont. The PO had lazily removed only what looks to be about half the smog system with random vacuum hoses hanging loose. I've got a write up including parts on how to fully desmog and am planning on doing it sooner than later. I wanted to get a second opinion from the community on this issue. Would a half removed smog system cause these random low idle issues? thanks much

Did you have any luck fixing the low idle?

Yeah the lack of vacuum to certain items can cause the low idle. Could also be a sign of your fuel pump getting ready to go or that there is something stuck in the carb.

Well this is interesting, this weekend while topping off my coolant and letting the truck warm up I experienced the same thing. She ran fine for a good 20 minutes or so and then suddenly went into a low idle, tap the gas and she was fine. Nothing out of the ordinary, not hot, no weird whistles or anything. Shut her down to see if I could see or hear anything weird and came back empty handed. Then fired her right back up, she ran for another good 15 or so minutes and same thing. Finished topping off the fluid and took her for a drive and she was fine, no weird idle, ran fine, etc.

You have cursed me now havent you?!

hey sorry i haven't posted anything on here. I haven't been able to get to the truck because I currently live in fairbanks and working on my truck outside when its only light outside around noon and its rarely above 20 degrees is very discouraging lol. I can take the truck to the DIY garage here on post but i have to pay for space and the guys there are douchers.
A little on the low idle. I have noticed a pattern that if i jump into the truck fire it up and immediately drive away i will almost certainly get a low idle, especially when throwing it into reverse. The truck will NEVER die however it just stumbles and sputters. A little pump of the fuel pedal and its ok for a second. just have to drive it off. This spring when the weather clears up I am planning on desmoging, putting in the battery cables from fourrunner (and writing a review) and flushing out my heater core or possibly replacing it. I do have a garage but its currently being taken up by a 1957 VW bug hotrod that im replacing the carbs on so im tight for space :/

check your main intake hose for cracks
