Hello Everyone....

Have a '96 LC with just over 150K on the clock.

Well, i've been searching for about 2 hours and found lots of threads on engine noises but nothing is leading me in a path that seems like my issue.

Starting about 2 months ago, I noticed a rattling or slightly muffled knocking sound coming from what seems like the front of the motor. The sound is random...meaning it seems to start and stop intermitantly as the engine warms up from a cold start. It only happens on cold starts and takes at least five minutes to go away completely with the engine just at idle. Sometimes, even with a cold engine, it does not make the sound at all, and all sounds normal. If you start to drive the truck immediately, the sound is NOT noticeable inside the truck. At idle. if the sound is occurring AND I increase throttle, it IS affected by RPM of the motor....meaning its rhythm increases.

I initially thought it was the water pump, which I just replaced and the sound persists. I also just did an oil/filter change and it had no affect.

Now, I have tried to isolate the sound by using a mechanics stethescope and listening on various parts of the motor or attached accesssories and do not hear the rattle through the stethescope on anything that i've listened to, which include:

the front of the valve cover
the rear of the valve cover
the water pump
the alternator
the a/c compressor
the front of the block

From reading other posts I became convinced that it was either the alternator/water pump belt idler pully, or the a/c belt idler pully, but with the stethescope (carefully!!) touching each of thier mounting bolts with the engine idling, I hear no rattle through the stethescope, leading me to eliminate them as possibilities as well.

The noise does not sound good, and I'd be thinking the worst, except the engine seems to run fine and sound perfect otherwise when the noise is not present. Once it warms up it is gone. Oil pressure and temp are all good and normal.

Any thoughts?? (help!)

bro, i gotta 96 with 151k on it, and i'm, having the same exact problem you are

My 97 has 178k on the clock and has the same sound...idler pulley. Goes away in about 5 or so minutes. Mine started about 3-4 months ago and I have not gotten around to replacing it. That "should" be the noise y'all are refering to.

I *hope* that's it and it makes sense that it is. I just thought I'd hear the sound transmitting through the steth when I had it on the idler mount bolt....and I didn't.

It could also be the timing chain tensionor. Hopefully it's one of the 2 idler pulleys.

It's been noticed by a few members, including myself, that if you're parked (or in idle while driving) with the front of vehicle point downward, a real scary, dull knocking sound occurs near the front bottom of engine. Apparently its the crank pounding into the higher level of oil which occurs at that angle.
Never occurs on level ground.

Well, I finally had time and replaced the A/C idler pully/bearing, and so far so good....no noise (fingers crossed).

Where were you when this was happening to me?! :flipoff2: :D You came in too late!

So I know this is from eons ago but my cruiser has recently had similar symptoms. Did the idler pulley bearing replacement fix the issue?
regards

I have had the same cold start up ticking/rattle for some time now. Had the stethoscope all over the front of the motor and haven't been able to locate the noise. Just happened to notice that the ac belt seemed to have a wobble to it so I tore in and replaced it. I had just rebuilt my motor and knew it wasn't the oil or water pumps and had replaced all the idler pulleys. What did I not replace? The near new belts that I set to the side for the rebuild. Problem solved. It appears the wobble in the belt was causing the (new) idler pulley for the ac to bang on the bearing stop and make the ticking noise until the belt warmed up and became more plyable. Just glad I caught this early enough that I didn't ruin a new toyota pulley. Hope this helps.
